As one of the New Atheists (Sam Harris) wrote, "Your beliefs define your vision of the world; they dictate your behavior; they determine your emotional responses to other human beings." In other words, if you truly believe it, you cannot help but live it. Therefore, I think you have drawn an erroneous distinction here. However, it's fair to note that a great deal of Christian historical practice has made the same error, producing large numbers of Christians who believe they can give lip service to the concept while avoiding the inconvenience of living up to it. Christian theologians have sometimes been guilty of misleading people by overemphasizing adherence to creeds. Part of the problem is the lengthy Christian history developing a doctring explaining Christ and his relationship to God the Father. The focus of the Church was simply elsewhere for a while, although in the first century, when such discussions began, it's clear there was no such division. The writings of Paul are full of theology and of admonitions about behavior, mixed together, each related to the other. Christian leaders have often been deeply concerned to refute those who consider Jesus just a teacher. (Remember, to the orthodox among us, he's also God Incarnate.) Perhaps they have allowed too little attention to be paid to the fact that he WAS also a teacher, and, if we agree that he was the incarnate deity, then his teachings must be important.

I doubt he was an atheist, at least not in the modern sense (since religion was more a specific part of daily life, no one was really an "atheist" in the way people are now, just because of the societal differences)... but he's certainly misunderstood. The vast schisms between the many different variations of "Christianity" prove this.

You really must get out more!!! No offence, but if Jesus said He was the Son of God, then case closed. Haven't yet come across any bible verses saying "oh, hang on, by the way, I didn't actually mean that, big joke, ha ha". Don't think He would suffered such a horrific death for a lie somehow! Many blessings... get some sun on your face.

there were no 'christians' when Jesus came on the scene.
Jesus was God in the flesh. Read John's Gospel for best revelation on that one. Some, not all, Jewish religious leaders misunderstood him and felt threatened by him. It was those types that had him crucified.

Followers of the risen Jesus began to spread out over the region quickly and the 'church' or 'body of christ' grew rapidly and has been growing ever since. The name 'christian' was first used in the town of Antioch most likely as a derogatory term. It means 'little christs'. In other words, people of the 'church' were following the ways of Jesus so closely they reminded others of the real Jesus. How we wish this was true for all who claim to be 'christian'

P.S. Be careful of those who spend the rest of their lives angry at God and spend up their energy trying to disprove what has been knocking on the doors of their hearts for years.

Start by reading the book of John in your Bible, or go to http://www.watchtower.org and do a search for Jesus. You can also contact the organization from that site and they will have someone from your area call you so you can get together with that man and together you can ask questions and he will help you to attain accurate knowledge.

You're taking a chance just asking a forum like this for such answers that contain pure Bible and accurate truth.

Good luck

No. I think he was pretty clear about being not only the son of God but also God at the same time. Maybe he was just a raving lunatic, maybe he didn't even exist. But I can tell you this, I don't believe in Jesus and I don't care!

No, Jesus was not misunderstood and He most certainly was not an atheist. He was truly the son of God.

Mar 12:29 And Jesus answered him, The first of all the commandments is, Hear, O Israel; The Lord our God is one Lord:
Mar 12:30 And thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind, and with all thy strength: this is the first commandment.
