Exactly 1 year.

Typical residency requirements include:
1. Living in the area for 1 year, excepting any time spent
at college.
2. Having a permanent residence in the state.
3. Having a driver's license from the state of residency.
4. Filing as a resident voter in that state.
5. If you have a car then you must register it in the new
state as well.

States don't mind who becomes a resident, but colleges get extra money so they stick on that clause about not earning residency status while attending college. The other reasons are to prove your intent to stay in the state.

If you lived in Michigan for straight 12 months, you are a resident of that state. So, let's say, you came to Michigan in January, 2006. You became state resident in January, 2007, if you didn't move to any other state in that time.
