I should mention that this couple also has a 4 year old daughter, so they already have a lot of toys from when she was the twins' age.

I would maybe look into a zoo pass or children's museum pass. I got both for X-mas gifts for my girls this past year to the Houston Zoo and Children's Museum. I have gotten soooo much use out of them.

2-yr olds love toys of any kind (my son is 2yrs 2days) but for a unique gift that would really be great, why don't you buy them a season/annual pass at the zoo/pool etc in their area. They could enjoy your gift all year and their parents would have something fun to do without spending a fortune. Most zoos sell yearly-type passes for around $75 or so. By the time you buy and ship toys you are already appoaching that in price. You could buy little stuffed animals to represent the zoo and send the parents (or have the zoo send the parents) the pass.

If they have a yard to play in an outdoor climber is perfect for the summer. It also helps mom and dad out during the day because the kids can play and wear themselves out. Toys R Us sells many different sizes from $60 - $300. But if you know want to save and it won't offend anyone, their are people on craigslist.com in your area selling them now. Good Luck!
