He just couldn't let go. I think psychiatrists call this rationalizing. It's like when I don't give to homeless people as I think "they'd just spend it on booze".

He is talking about doing anything without love in your heart doesn't really accomplish much.

"If I give all I possess to the poor and surrender my body to the flames, but have not love, I gain nothing. " 1 Corinthians 13:3

When we give or help others out, we should be doing it because we want to, not because we have to.

" Every man according as he purposeth in his heart, so let him give; not grudgingly, or of necessity: for God loveth a cheerful giver." 2 Corinthians 9: 7

You can give all you have--if it is done because it's an oblagation--then you are giving because it is demanded.

If on the other hand you give because you know it is the right thing to do and you know within it's the right thing to do to help people.
Paul says that giving to be giving--no love--you are giving in vain.

its like when praying to God and you are not sincere about what you are praying about, then the whole point of praying or asking God is rendered useless. God wants us to be sincere in everything we do.

Do you give a gift to a friend out of the heart or with love? if not, then you have gained nothing.

we should also give and not expect anything in return

That motives are important. If you give out of love then you will have peace but if you give to impress or for other reasons other than love it is meaningless.

Because he wanted to show that if you do good deeds aren't the only way to get to heaven. If you do good deeds solely to get to heaven, your not really doing good. You're being selfish. If you do good deeds because you love others then you are not being selfish. You cannot go to heaven on good deeds alone. You have to have the love behind the good deeds. And you cannot go to heaven on love alone because if you truly love god you will do good deeds for him.
