No worries, Mate. First thing, get yourself a schooner and relax. Without a work permit, getting a job can be a bit iffy in OZ, as there are so many Europeans there on working/holiday visas. However, it is possible, simply have to look in the right places. City work will be tougher in this event, but there's a lot of remote parts to OZ where they're a bit more relaxed about things and a cash in hand job might be possible.

It is possible to get a 4 month work permit as an American, go to a travel agency (I recomend STA Travel, as I used to work there), and they should be able to help you with the details.

Either way, find a good/cheap hostel in Perth when you arrive. The Underground was recomended to me as a decent place with a good vibe. Check in, chill out and meet some folks in the hostel. Some will be working in Perth, some will be traveling through and some will be just hanging out. Someone'll give you a good idea on what to do next. I spent a year in OZ and had a ball, I'm sure however it turns out for you, it'll be an amazing time.

That's a big decision to make but you must be prepared
for living in a foreign country even if you speak the same language..if you're not retired ,you need to find out about the working condition, are you allowed to work ?
The bottom line,my advice to you is to do your home work about the region you're going to reside by searching and contacting some members of the American communities
and I am sure they'll help you after you explain yourself
in details.
I wish you luck

I presume you have a residential visa and a work permit? If not you are going to find it very difficult even getting in with a one-way ticket. You cannot apply for visas or permits once you are here, you must do it all in advance. If you haven't done so yet, look at the Department of Immigration web page at http://www.immi.gov.au

You just wasted a lot of money. There's no way immigration will let you in unless you have a visa.
