Is there any positions in the car that will cause less damage. If you are certain of a head on collision and know the airbag is going to go off, should you put your hands up to cover your face or down, turn your head, etc?? Is there any proper procedure?

Hold the wheel firmly at the 2:00 and 10:00 positions. Face forward. Hold yourself all the way back in your seat, head against the head restraints. Basically, the normal driving position for the most part.

The majority of the force will hit you in the chest, not the face. Blocking your head or torso with your arms WILL cause needless injury, possibly shattering your arms or worse. Ducking your head down could get you killed. Turning your head won't do much but if you see the impact coming it's best to be in a face-forward position.

If you had enough time to decide what to do because you knew that your airbag was going to go off, then you would have plenty of time to avoid the obvious collision that would cause the airbag to go off and most common sensed people would do something to avoid that than worry about a hot bag exploding in their face. If you are paranoid about the airbag, pull the fuse. A head on collision is the easiest to avoid and the most fatal, turn your wheel to right slightly and you don't have to worry about either, better yet, don't drive.

Keep your hands on the wheel, at 9 and 3 position, and do not lock your thumbs around the wheel. Never put your hands in front of your face, the air bag will smash them into your face, and can break you arms. If you are sitting square in your seat, not leaning forward at all, the air bag will keep you from flying forward, and, at most will bruise or scrape you skin, much better than having your hand smashed into your nose at 200 mph. If you turn your head, and your head is not right against the head rest, you will do a lot of damage to your neck.

Do not put your hands up. You will most likely break your arms and nose, not to mention possibly poking out your eye.

Sit back in your seat in a normal position, stay relaxed. Go with the movement of the car.

Make sure there are no objects or anything between you and the airbag.
