cO2 = pellet gun some with a caliber of .25 or more are very powerful.
air rifle = generic name for a pellet gun, could be cO2, spring (break barrel, side lever, etc) pneumatic (pump)

at short range, .177 or .20 is probably most accurate. Longer ranges you are better with a .22 or even .25.
Blackpowder = fire arm, permit needed in many places
Air Rifle = Not a fire arm in most places, permit probably not needed, especially lower powered ones.

CO2 Air Guns use compressed Carbon Dioxide for the propelant. Also, about 90% of your paintball markers do too. This propelant is good ONLY for calibers up .32 and lower. Either handgun or rifles can use CO2 and are about the same in accuracy unless you wish to pay the extra $300.00 or more for an accurate one. Air rifles and handguns work on a self(read the user pumps the air)-compressing method and are the same for accuracy and what not as CO2 powered units. Prices are the same too. As to black powder handguns(revolver type and one shot pistole` type as well) and rifles use aeither a loose powder that must be loaded into the cylinder and then compressed, or a pellet type load that then as with the loose stuff has the bullet preceded by the packing wad placed into the cylinder right after. Now, black powder firearms are much more powerfull than air or CO2 rifles and handguns, yet they(black powder firearms) are fairly high in respects to maintanence and volume of getting dirty or fouling from the pwder residue. Many a time have I personnaly cursed the morons who didn't invent a cleaner speciffically for black powder weapons until the early to mid 1990's. Most black powder weapons are cleaned using boiling hot water and soap and a good cleaning rod with either a scrub brush or a cleaning wad on the end. For black powder weapons, go with the stainless steel if your going to be hunting in wet or humid areas for ease of cleaning and longer barrel/mechanism life. As to calibers for accuracy and distance, the combination 9mm, .38/.357's are the same size, just different weight and are good for medium range target practice and small/meduim size game hunting. The good old .45 colt/ACP(auto caliber pistol)/.45-70/.45government are very good at long range targeting and big game. However, they do have some impressive recoil, so be prepaired for it. If your going for period pieces, go with either Sturm Ruger or Bunnelli, both of which make exelant replica pieces in both standard and stainless steel. As with all firearms, follow local state laws as to carry and transportation please. A firearm safety class or even a personal carry/concealed carry weapons permit may be required depending on the situation you are wanting to be in. Safety first please.

blackpowder is the most powerful it is a gun that uses an actual propellant to fire bullets. there are air rifles that will go as fast a a 22(1000 fps) and co2 guns that come close to that kind of power.

Is some sort of gun/assault weapons ban in our future? I suspect so but you never know for sure. if so when do you think it would be made law? The American government is in gridlock. Any projections on when ANYTHING will get done are just shots in the dark. If assault weapons are OK, why not hand grenades, surface to air missiles and nukes?

There is so much to cover in your question, I'm going to suggest you go to the 'guns' article in Wikipedia and then read and follow all the links to all the different guns listed.
