I played on a worship team for an AOG even though I was technically a Baptist (silly but true) They place a lot of weight on speaking in tongues and it seems that different AOG's teach different doctrines about it. I heard everything from (It should be done in order and with interpreters) To (Speaking in tongues is proof of the baptism of the Holy Spirit) The latter resulted in Holy Spirit parties where people pretty much just went nuts. That's my experience with them. My view on tongues is the same as Paul's in the Bible.

I go to a church called first assembly but I think it is different. However I have been to penecostal churches and I can explain a little about it. Speaking in tongues is considered to be one of Gods holy gifts. The only time it can be looked at as being bad is if someone is just speaking in tongues and it is not being interpreted. When someone stands up at church and starts speaking in another language (tongues) usually someone else should be standing at the same time interepreting everything that person is saying. It is a message from God so it only makes sense that he would choose someone to also interepret the message so you can understand it. It doesn't make sense though for someone to stand up and just start speaking in tongues and for no one to interpret it because why would God tell us something he did not want us to understand? This is what I have been told as far as the subject. It is like how God gives some people the gift of prophecy like he did in revelations with John. However the Bible does say that these gifts will not happen as much in the last days.

I was raised in an Assembly of God or Pentecostal church where speaking in tongues was the norm, but I now attend a Baptist church.

On the issue of tongues, the Pentecostal church believes;

1) That the gift of tongues comes automatically with the gift of the Holy Spirit, but it doesn't. It is a lesser gift & it is given for the purpose of the unbeliever, that they may believe.
But, not all people are given this gift, in fact, there is no one gift that is given to all.

2) They see no problem with many people speaking in tongues at the same time. God is a God of order, not disorder.
Only 2 or 3 the most may speak in tongues at one time & only if there is an interpreter present. If there is no interpreter then they are to be silent.

I heard almost the same surmon at a Pentecostal church & a Baptist - almost word for word the same. The difference was the tongues issue.

The Baptism in the Holy Spirit is a vital experience of the Christian life. It is a special work of the Spirit beyond salvation. On the Day of Pentecost, disciples who had already made a decision to follow Jesus "were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues" (Acts 2:4). Paul asked the Ephesians disciples if they had received the Holy Spirit, after which "the Holy Spirit came on them, and they spoke in tongues" (Acts 19:2). New Testament believers were constantly challenged to be filled with the Spirit (Acts 1:4,5; Ephesians 5:18). The Assemblies of God is committed to the baptism in the Holy Spirit because the experience is such an important focus of New Testament Christianity.

The Bible gives strict guide lines on this . For everyone that
speaks in tongues there must be one or two to interpret .
1Cor.12:27-31,Rom.8:6 , 26-27, 12:4-8 , 15:17-19 ,Act.19:
1-7 , Otherwise Satan him self with his little foot soldiers use
this to falsely build the church and lead them ,you away from
the truth . People are suckers for out ward signs and Jesus
talks a lot about this in The Book of Revelation . Be careful
Gift from the Spirit are real but , God gives us rules that must
be followed . Other than that they could be from Satan like
I said before . But you should alway go to the Bible for answers ,,

I am not a member of the Assemblies of God, but I was raised in a Pentecostal family. Generally, Pentecostals regard the 'infilling of the Holy Spirit' as a separate event from their acceptance of Jesus Christ as Savior. They believe that, as it is described in the book of Acts, those that waited in the Upper Room for the gift of the Holy Spirit spoke in tongues. Pentecostals believe that the experience of the gift of the Holy Spirit is given in the same manner today.

Unfortunately, they ignore the writings of Paul, where he lists speaking in tongues as only ONE of the gifts given by the Holy Spirit. We are told that we cannot come to the Lord without the leading of the Holy Spirit, thus the Holy Spirit Himself cannot be the gift.

The Holy Spirit gives us gifts such as giving, teaching, preaching, etc. Each person must seek for his particular gift in the body of Christ.

With the help of the Holy Spirit you may pray in tongues. However you have control over this and do not have to speak it out loud unless you choose to do so.

This is not the same as doing so in a group of people such as at church. When doing that, scripture says there must be at least one other person who can interpret the "tongues" for you.

i don't really know what assembly of God means but- i go to Livingway Pentcostal church- and tongues is in the bible in many places - acts 2:19 tells you what to do to be saved and one is receiving the holy Ghost (which is tongues )
(the evidence)
in the bible (word of God) it tells you tongues is for the non believer to see that you have the holy ghost(the bible says)
Mary mother of Jesus spoke in tongues in the upper room
(in acts)If you have the Holy Spirit living in you (Jesus) then you will speak in tongues as a prayer language.or intercede for others - the holy spirit will help you stay on the right track (per say) He will help you say NO ! to the things you used to do in the (world)
God Bless you -

This is a gift that God wants you to have. There is a good book out called 'The Holy Spirit, A Pentecostal Interpretation', by L. Thomas Holdcroft. I think you would find it useful in learning what you want to know. I found my copy at amazon.com
