What possible mechanism would be responsible for this effect? There are only two possibilities: electromagnetism and gravity. Since planets emit no light of their own, only gravity remains as a possible explanation of how celestial objects might interact with a human being.

Long ago I performed the necessary calculations to determine the force of martian gravity on a human being still on Earth. The result was far less that a trillionth of a gram, when Mars is closest to Earth.. This means that, when a baby is being delivered, the gravitational force of the obstetrician's hands, as he reaches for the baby, is thousands of times greater than the force of Martian gravity. Obviously, the gravity of celestial objects is far, far too weak to have any significant effect on human beings.

The electromagnetic force from distant celestial objects is nil, because for the most part, planets and stars carry no net electrical charge.

If a cosmic ray, from a distant exploding star, zapped a strand of DNA in a chromosome inside the nucleus of a cell, it would likely cause damage that could cause a mutation.

On a social level, human civilizations have observed the motions of stars and planets for millennia. The sun, moon, and stars have played an important part in the development of all known human cultures, particularly in religious matters.

Do I think the rocks floating in space around the sun have any effect on me? No. However, those rocks floating in space around the sun have served as symbols since ancient times of the divine forces that govern all aspects of life. Those forces go through cycles. Astrologers attempt to keep track of those cycles by observing the positions of the rocks in space. Properly interpreted, Astrology seems to work, but it isn't the rock in space but rather the universal concepts those rocks represent that have their effects. The planet Venus is not the Goddess Venus. And that is what Astrology means to me.

Now, that being said, I do not believe in Fate or predesintation as some inescapable movie that's already been filmed. I think we have Free Will to make decisions and determine our own fates to some great extent. Astrology may show us what cards are dealt, but it is up to us to play our hand. There are always choices, and there are always many possible outcomes.

Govern, as in control, no. Effect as in crazy people on full moons, yes. Remember the wise men read the stars and found the Messiah. They knew who He was.

The only effect they have is a tiny gravitational one and a psychological one in that they provoke thought about them. They are objects of interest but they don't affect your thought any more than a tree does.
