I was just reading an interview in Smithsonian Magazine this month with Daniel Gilbert author of Stumbling on Happiness.
He makes the point that the best predictor of future happiness is current happiness. People who run away (or move or marry or whatever) in the hopes of happiness find that it doesn't work. They are still the same person they were before, just in a different place or different circumstance.
Your dad summed it up beautifully.

Daddy is a very wise man! I can tell you that only one time have I ever felt the need to run and keep on going! That was when my mother was diagnosed with 80% of her liver gone from cancer! I do not know why, but I just wanted to take my Mom and run with her. Where? I have no clue! It was just that need to run from the reality of the situation!

I've thought about it - usually out of selfishness. But rationally thinking, whatever I was trying to run away from was not as bad as, say, living under a bridge, or starving, or freezing....anytime I think I have it bad, I read the newspaper. At least no one(that I know of) is trying to kill me, at least I don't have a fatal illness, or live in a third world country. It's really not that bad.

Yeah, once when I was 3, but that was really a trip 40 miles on a Greyhound bus.
The other time, at 15, I walked about 15 miles before the state cops brought me back.

A lot of people run away from their problems. The only way to get rid of problems is to get through them. If you run, eventually it catches up. It is very dangerous to be a runaway. Missing children aren't just missing. Something happens to them.

Pick a favorite:
I AM going to run away ... but I'm not allowed to cross the street by myself ( :
I'm in!! Where are we going?!
I ran away, but then I didn't like here either.
I drove.
I went to find myself and realized everyone else was lost too.
I'd like to run TO something instead of away.
... okay, I'll stop now.

I've never thought of that, and I wouldn't recommend it! Please don't. It's a BAD idea, I mean, you could get hurt, raped, abducted-and think how your parents would feel!
Please seriously consider this and your reasons for wishing to run away. Are they really worth it? Chances are, NO! And if you have a serious problem, talk to your parents or a counselor about it.
Hope this helps! :)

I ran away and I found myself. I returned and left myself there and ran away without myself. I have made my life better for it.
