The best home defense weapon is a shotgun preferably a short barreled pump, Some people like a double barrel side by side for intimidation but that is two shot vs 5-9 depending on the pump you get. A handgun preferably a revolver would be the second choice, no safety or slide to fumble with in a crisis situation. It should be atleast 38 caliber. A rifle is not a particulary good defensive weapon unless you live in Alaska in a area where you might be attacked by bears, in that case 30-06 or more powerful. A high powered rifle really is a very poor choice in built up areas, a miss fired outside could hit an innocent person a mile or more away, or go through several walls if you shoot it in a building and do the same thing.

1. Protection from what? People or something Bigger?

2. I disagree with some of the above posters concerning rifles. The handgun is a last choice. It's power is limited so is it's range. A rifle has the advantage in that in a hand to hand situation, You can make butt slash & parry moves as taught in bayonet drills. The rifle can all so be equiped with Lights, Lazers or optics. The pistol calber carbine is what your looking for. Guns like A Berretta Storm, The New Taurus pump action or My personal choice the M1 Carbine. Light, easy to use, Not overpowering, good out to 200yds. Found anywhere still new or used. Lever actions like the henry .44 mag offer higher power for 4 legged protection & avoid any assault weapon bans in some areas.

3. There is no magic hand gun choice. Thats why there are so many....

4. Long guns have a intimidation factor. The sound of a 870 pump racking or the slide on my Carbine will make the weak willed move on. They know even from a 100 yds you can hit them. The avg. hand gun shooter can't.

This is what every household needs..
1st
Fn 5.7 handgun USG.
PRO
these are highly accurate handguns with 20rd clips that can be expanded up to 30rds. There is almost 75% less recoil than a 9mm. So are great for women. Plus you have a chance to engage muiltiple targets quickly. These rounds also have a have a high pentration. If knowledgeable police officer knows you have on these in your hand he will treat you as if you have a rifle in your hand. Plus has picany rail for accesorys for a tactical light/laser.
Cons cost $850 walmart doesn't carry ammo for it lol

I also recomend having a 9mm of some sort a glock22,cz-75 berreta 92fs. You cna always take the rounds of every other tom dick and harry that has one. they all have pros and cons i have one or more of all of these and i am happy with them

Shotguns... Either a mossburg 12 gauge 500/590 with an 18.5inch barrel. a speed master grip to help control the recoil.
Add heat sheaild and light.
or a remmington 870 12gauge with a mag extenstion and a speed master pistol grip to help control ther recoil.
add a heat sheild and a light.
PRO
These are both great firearms well worth $. These are easy to move around in hall ways. Plus the sound of these firearms cha chunk of loading has stoped more bar fights and sent more intruders in the world heal and toeing it out the door.

CON only hold 5-8 shots

Rifles i worry about shooting through walls and catching stary incocents in the brain with a bullet.....
But for indoors..
ak-47 semi-auto
Pros
VERY .... 20,30,40,50 round Magazines. Decent 7.62x39 round. cons- not that accurate.
ar-15
pro- highly accruate gun and round. tons of accesorys get long barrels short barrels, high cap magazines
con-small grain (weight of the bullet) very costly they like to jam. THey have featury built to un jam them tho....

a rifle is not great for home defense, it can be taken away from you if there is an intruder around the corner of the blindside of a room, second a bolt action sucks for a second repeated shot under pressure, a semiauto ruger 22 has 10 shot capacity but can go through double walls, you have to think common sense, a handgun in semiauto is good but under pressure no, a double action revolver is great for home defense for any person. I recommend a shotgun, just the cocking of a shotgun can scare a person and a light attached to the shotgun can blind an intruder.

Let me make it clear right now. Rifles are not good self-defense weapons because they overpentrate and can hurt or kill innocent people. Handguns are generally adequate weapons, but their accuracy is only as good as the individual firing it. Under pressure you don't have time to take aim and put your rounds where you want them. So following this logic, the shotgun is the only real choice for self-defense because shotguns are very powerful up close and scatter instead of launching a single projectile. With a shotgun, you can simply point it at your attacker and squeeze the trigger. As for gauge, a 12 or a 20 gauge is just right for self-defense. For a female, the 20 gauge option is easier to handle than a 12 gauge in terms of recoil.

Not too many perople use rifles, just because they shoot one bullet and a shotgun has a better chance of hitting them if you shoot shot. You can get a handgun because they are lighter and easier to mmove around with. I would prefer a shotgun because they can shoot more than one pellet. Id use a 00 buckshot or something like that. Id rather use a shotgun because i would rather be looking down the barrel of a pistol than a shotgun.

If you were wanting a rifle, id go with a rimfire because the are lighter weight, and it will do some damage, but its not going to kill someone easily, so they could be turned oer to the police, but if they are carrying a weapon, id want something thats gonna stop them, like a 30-06 or a 308, or maybe a 30-30 because they are quicker to get a second shot out of a lever gun.

If you want a pistol, use a 22 or 38 if you dont want to seriously injure them or kill them. If you are wanting to do enough damage, get a 357, a .40, or a 44 or another bigger caliber. Id reccomend a semi-auto, but i dont think they make a 357 or 44 semi-auto, they are revolvers.

For shotguns, id get a pump 12 gauge. nobody likes the sound of a pump cycling through shells when you are on the otehr end of it.

Its more of the shooters preference on the caliber for genders.

If we are talking a SHTF scenario I would recommend either something based on the AK47 or AR15 platform or a FAL. All use high capacity firearms and use common calibers 7.62X39, .223, and .308 respectively. The first 2 can also be found in other exciting calibers. All 3 were military issue adn thus had a large research budget and are reliable and rugged. For firepower the FAL is the best, for lack of matinence and outstanding reliability its the AK, and for precision the AR type guns. All of these ammo should be easily obtainable. The downside is cost is rising on all of them and their ammo.

As far as handguns go I would go more by weight/size or age than gender. For the young shooter or smaller person 7.62X25 or 9mm is good, for a larger person this opens up the door to 45 auto, 357, 10mm, and other beefy calibers.
