Being retired Army and living outside a base, I get the impression it has truly demoralized the overstressed troops who were already on thier third deployment.

The "Surge " was the most shortsighted plan since Rumsfeld decided not to guard Iraqi Ammunition depots allowing thousands of tons of explosives to fall into the hands of the insurgents.

My husband's first deployment to Iraq was supposed to be 6-12 months. It was 15. They told them 2 weeks before they were supposed to come home that they had been extended for 3-6 months. His second deployment was supposed to be 12-18 months. It was less than a year, but many of the people in his unit got extended by 4 weeks at the last minute. I'd MUCH rather know ahead of time that they were going to be gone for that long, than it be a surprise at the end of the deployment when you're already planning on them being home.

My husband's unit is leaving later this year for a 15 month deployment. A lot of the guys are going on their 3rd tour, and they have almost all been extended on their first 2 tours. My husband is being left on rear detachment, but the opinions I have gotten from most of the soldiers and families are the same as mine. At least now they're telling people up front. It's much better to be disappointed now than a few days before they are set to come home. It's much easier to prepare for a deployment when you have an honest estimate of how long it will be.

ETA: The other guys is right about WWII. I met a vet here in our town who spent 32 months in the South Pacific. No phones, no internet, no 2 wks R&R. Kind of makes 15 months seem not so bad.

Well of course they change the rules. The insurgency is constantly changing, so must the Army! We are at WAR! With war comes sacrifice! Good grief. What do people think is supposed to happen? Our soldiers go over for a little vacation and then magically everything is FIXED? If the Iraqis would stop killing each other then maybe the mission would be complete. But no, we are there, and we have an obligation to secure the country before our soldiers come home. My husband is in train up right now and I absolutely support him, love him, and miss him when he is gone. But he has a job to do, and he is ready to go do it! So 9 months, 12 months, 15 months, 18 months...it is all the same. He has a job to do and we are going to sit and wait for him to come home WHEN THE JOB IS DONE!!!

If they are ordered to do it...Then they must.
I've noticed a lot of people complaining about what the military does.
Wake up people!! The military is designed for only one purpose...shooting the enemy. Although, the education is cool, It's NOT the primary function.
How many of you idiots have forgotten that?
The military has been a VOLUNTARY thing for a long time.
Every one of then VOLUNTEERED for what they are doing.
Whoever doesn't like what the military does...DON'T JOIN and let those who WANT to defend our country do their job.
I am grateful that there are those who will defend this country at all costs.

I think its rediculous! my boyfriend is in the Army and he is leaving for 15 months in either Nov, Dev, or Jan! And i also have a friend over there right now who has been there since November and he wont be back till Feb or after! Granted they get a lot of money.... but some of these men are missing their children being born, or growing up, the first couple years i think are important. I think its very sad.

As a solder i'd have to say it sucks. Logistically it's smart. It increases the amount of downtime I have between deployments.

Its what they signed up to do. Anytime a soldier gets orders it states clear as day that your deployment can be for 18mos. Every time my hubby was deployed I expected him to be gone for 18mo and considered myself lucky that he came home after only 12 mo.

I think our government continuously fails to keep it's word, and changes the rules as they wish.

Government of the government, for the government, by the government
