There are online sites that can help you, and one big online site called amazon.com that can send you books that will really help you.

For free advice, I recommend The Wine Doctor.com (URL: http://www.thewinedoctor.com/advisory/advisoryhome.shtml ). Lists how to taste wine, where to buy wine, accessible via a clear, easy-to-read directory.

Many of the other sites I researched (wine.com, intowine.com, wineanswers.com, etc.) were trying to sell you something, and had a couple of paragraphs of wine advice tacked on to entice you to the location. Or the information was so disorganized you wanted to smash the screen trying to find answers to basic questions.

The Wine Spectator offers online classes for $39, but....

The best source I've found is "The University Wine Course: A Wine Appreciation Text & Self Tutorial (Paperback) " by Marian Baldy, PhD. It's put out by UC Davis and it's a self-paced textbook, taking you through the varieties of wine, discussing how each is made, and how to taste each. The ISBN number is 0-932664-69-5, it's on sale at Amazon.com for $23.00 and it looks like you can get it used for about $16.00.

This book will teach you not only how to taste wine, but what to serve with what, the chemical analysis of wine, and so so much more.

I've spent a lot more than $16 on a book and received a lot less.

The link to amazon.com is http://www.amazon.com/University-Wine-Course-Appreciation-Tutorial/dp/0932664695/ref=sr_1_1/103-5329747-5975847?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1177877128&sr=8-1

Anyway, good luck. I can't think of a more fun project to go through.

You can only learn so much about wine without tasting it. Check the local winestore for when they have tasting classes.

i don't know if there's a website, but a few years ago when I really started getting into wine, I bought wine tasting for dummies. Great book! I highly recommend it!
