It depends on your tolerance to pain and how much tarter and inflammation you have. The longer it's been since your last dental cleaning, the more tarter build up there is. Chances are, if you have tartar, you will be sore, and your gums will bleed. But, just a few days after your cleaning your gums will feel fantastic. Be sure to rinse with warm salt water at night to encourage gingival healing, and even the use of sensodyne toothpaste will help with sensitivity.

It depends on how deep the tarter goes into the gum. If you have deep pockets, then there is some pain, but they use a cavitron, which breaks the tarter off the teeth much faster and easier than doing it by hand.

I recently had 3yrs of build up tarter removed. My dentist numbed my mouth, so I wasn't able to feel anything. So you may want to ask your dentist to do the same. They suck a needle in my gum. It did not hurt. It felt as though you have just stuck your gum with a toothpick. If you are able to get a dentist to numb your mouth then take something over the counter for pain after you leave the dentist, and before the medicine wears off.

Depending on how much hardened tartar you have. My husband had a lot. Gum disease and heavy calculas (spelling? hardened tartar). He had to do a deep cleaning, three sessions. The first time, he didn't feel a thing. They prescribed a rinse. The 2nd, 3rd, they numbed him and he didn't feel a thing. If you are worried, talk to them about numbing it first if possible. Bring an MP3 player to relax if they allow. Afterwards, he said it was the best thing he ever did. And it looked like he got a professional whitening. He tasted better and no more bad breath. Good luck!
