For the last week my thumb has been cramping up and twitching and all day when i type i have to stop and stretch my fingers because it cramps up right below my thumb where their is soft tissue. Sometimes it cramps so bad i cant get my thumb to straighten up.

I have had bilateral carpel tunnel surgery. The symptoms of carpel tunnel are numbness, ache, sometimes up to the elbow and wrist pain. There is a brace that can be worn to immobilize the thumb and wrist and sometimes anti-inflammatories help too. I for one had to have surgery. I'm not sorry, it worked and corrected the problem.

The carpal tunnel is a space in the bones of the wrist through which passes the nerves to your hand. I too have it in both wrists but I've been told is isn't bad enough for surgery.

Try wearing a wrist support at night when you sleep and make sure you have good wrist support when you type. It's also good to do wrist stretches periodically throughout the day.

Prolonged repetitive hand motion will inflame the tissue causing swelling at the carpal ligament. This presses on the nerve that serves the thumb and first3 fingers and the medial half of the 4th finger. Thus pain. If not treated in time surgery is needed to relieve the pressure on the nerve. In advanced states one can not pick-up a fork to feed themselves.
Get it looked at. Your employer will probably fight you on this issue. I have had surgery on both wrist as so has my wife.
