My son, who was 3 last week, is dry all day at home, and never uses nappies at home, but when he goes to nursery or out in public, he just wont go.
I went to pick him up from nursery today at 3pm, and he had been there since 8.45am, but had not used the toilet all day!!
He still had his big boy pants on, but wont use the toilet or potty!!

Has anyone else had the same problem, or any ideas on how to get him using the toilet at other places apart from home?

woman..i dont believe in punishing my child for wetting himself, and i dont think that a child, who just turned 3 last week is too old at all, especially for a boy!

When he is at nursery he doesnt have accidents, he just holds it in all day.
The staff ask him every few hours if he wants to go, but he always says no

I must highly disagree with one of your answers, you are correct in not punishing him for this. He is not being naughty on purpose. He is doing very well to be trained at 3! My son was not trained til he was almost 4 and my pediatrician assured me it was not uncommon! (ignore rude comments, hun)
anyway, Can you take him to the potty when he gets at the nursery? Just to let him get used to it? New big toilets are scary for a little guy. If he uses a potty seat at home this would really help him. Bring him one for the nursery so it will be familiar. Take one with you to stores. reward him for going as I'm sure you already do at home.
Since he has just gotten potty trained he will get used to going. Talk to them at nursery and see if they will take some extra time with him b/c Its not good for him to hold it all day.
good luck!

Maybe he`s having too good a time at nursery to go to the toilet. You know, kids start having fun, don`t want to break off ? I wonder if he`s getting enough to drink there as well....? You need to have a word with the staff - tell them you want them to take him to the toilet at some sort of break time - not in the middle of him enjoying something. Some kids can hold their water for the longest time and it doesn`t bother them ! Also ask how many drinks he is having during the time he is there. It`s difficult as you are not there yourself. In public places when you are with him, i would do what someone else has suggested until he gets into a routine - bribe him. Yes you will have to. Tell him you will do ( whatever it is he wants to do while you are out....) after he has done a wee. Keep the drinks flowing for him. He only has a small bladder and will have to give in some time. Good that he has a strong bladder though !

Is he having accidents, or he's just waiting until he gets home?? If he's having accidents, it could be the insecurity of day care. If he's not, and he's just holding it, he's not comfortable using it there. Don't make a big deal about it. The more you fret, the more he'll have this issue.

My friend's daughter did this. She would only go in her potty at home and on one certain toilet at Wal-Mart. She's four, and she still does this. They don't get out much.

me too, I am having the same trouble - my little boy is also three and when he is at home or when we go out he will ask to go for a wee but a number 2, not a chance. So when he soils himself at nursery they used to ring me up and ask me to go round and change him (only a ten min walk) now they don't bother and he comes home with a terrible rash on his bum because of being in int so long. My anger point is what do they do when he asks to go for a wee at nursery do they ignore him completely?

If he uses a small potty I would take it to nursery. For public restrooms get him used to a potty seat at home and then take it with you when you go out, they even have ones that fold up and you can put it in a diaper bag. worked great for my kids
If he is scared of the loud flushing-wait till he is away a couple of inches and say "here goes" so he knows its coming and he may even want to hold his ears.

when my daughter started potty training she developed a phobia about pooing, my partner and i worried loads as she held it in until she had too go and it was very sore for her which made her fear worse, eventually tho she grew out of it though.

Don't acknowledge the fact he hasn't been jus ignore it completely and continue to praise him in the house , at least he has good control if he's going all day without wetting himself so its probably just the fact he dosn't feel secure in the unfamiliar surroundings.

maybe he's just a little nervous about the public potty... When you go out to restaurants/zoos/etc.. does he go? Do you go with him when he does?
if it was me i would go in with him at the nursery everyday before you leave to go home and take him potty. Be there with him & say good... And try hard to get him to go - like you havent gone all day, you have got to go - its ok, mommy's right here. Then once he gets that down - stick him in there by himself & say its ok, mommy be right outside... that kind of thing...
he might just be nervous cause its not home & its out of his safety net - might just need mommy to reinforce its ok to go potty at the nursery by showing him/going with him. Good luck to you

Buy a jug of his favorite juice and have the nursery keep his cup full all day and encourage him to have bathroom breaks. Eventually he will HAVE to pee really bad. Also try to find out what it is about the public bathroom he is afraid of or doesn't like.
