Religion, as a social institution, helps a society define what is sacred and what is profane (of the regular, everyday world). Relgion helps a society perceive goals that extend beyond the everyday existence. Religion helps to unify a society's community as well as help to codify certain moral rules to maintain a society's order and safety. This is the Structural Functionalist point of view of Sociologists. However, for many religion gives them an opportunity to share a faith, connect with the divine, or (in some worst-case scenarios) justify their prejudices.
There is no single purpose or function to Religion. It is a complex and ancient social institution that has been around since ancient man first looked to the phenomena of nature and attempted to explain it. Supernatural causes were used because ancient mankind had no knowledge of the natural forces that surrounded them.
