You're right - cats don't get 'colds', A snotty nose is a sign that your cat has a virus. OK colds are viruses, but cats do not just shake respiratory viruses off with no ill effects like we do. There's no such thing as 'just a cold' in a cat.
It's most likely to be cat flu, or it could be one of the other common viruses like feline infectious peritonitis.
Take your cat to the vet, as this can develop into something bad even after a long time. A cat that gets over cat flu continues to be a carrier of the virus for the rest of it's life - it will not show symptoms but can infect other cats who can suffer and/or die from it.

I have a rescue cat who had apparently gotten into fights while he was a stray. He had chronic sinus trouble and needed antibiotics alot. The vet finally found another cat's tooth stuck up through the roof of his mouth into his sinus. Take him to the vet.

My cat and my sister's cat both had chronic upper respiratory infections. None of my or her other cats got sick from them. The cats just had weak immune systems, I guess. It turned out that my sister's cat had FIV, which meant he couldn't fight off viruses as easily as other cats. My cat got cancer and had to be euthanized a few weeks later. I firmly believe that he may have lived longer if he had a stronger immune system.
Talk to your vet about this. Ask about giving some kind of supplements or herbal productsto bolster his immune system. As they get older, the weak immune system does make them more susceptible to diseases.

cats always have snotty noses but if its dripping badly or dry and crusty, your best bet is for him to see a vet. my cat has a snotty nose and watery eyes that actually cry! the people who gave him to us smoked like crazy and the vet says its the cigarette smoke that caused that. if you smoke its probably the scent if you don't your cat can really be sick. or allergic to something in your home.

Is he a Persian or Himmy? It could just be natural. Or he could have something else wrong take him to the vet, they usually know best.
