I got my tats about 10 years ago and they are fading fast. The colors grow darker and the edges "feather". Imagine a line drawn with a sharp pencil compared to a line drawn with chalk.
My tattoos were professionally done - my artist allows me to come in and 'refresh' my colors as needed.

I have seen plenty of older women with tattoos that have looked fine. I'm not old per say (turning 30 soon) but I have a couple tattoos that are 10+ years old and they still look great.
There can be many factors on how long a tattoo lasts/ages .. it can depend on how you take care of it and yourself. If you gain and lose a large amount of weight suddenly, that will age the tattoo by stretching out the skin especially if you're older the collagen reproduction in your skin won't cause it to snap back right away, if you don't keep your skin hyrated that will cause your skin to dry out and age your skin quicker and very well may over time affect the sharpness of the lines, the skill of the tattoo artist who tattooed you can also affect the aging of the tattoo - i.e. if they had their needle depth set too long or short then the ink isn't in the right layer of skin and can blur quicker than others.
Sunscreen is a HUGE HUGE part of caring for your tattoo. If you don't wear sunscreen and you go into the sun a lot and get burned or even tan .. that will definately affect the sharpness of the lines and brightness of the colors.

Here in my town we have women who are now in their 40's who started getting tattoos in the mid-80's. In my opinion they look just terrible. The colors fade into this sort of "rotten meat" kind of grey the lines start to bleed. I don't believe it is ever a good idea to "draw" on your body. If you love an idea for a tattoo, go to the tattoo shop and get in drawn for you on paper and frame it and put it up in your house. I think in about 25 years we are going to have grandmothers walking around who look downright stupid. Others may disagree with me but I have NEVER seen a tattoo age well, and lets be honest, neither have any of you.

The quality of the work has improved over the years so tattoos now will remain looking better longer than the ones done thirty years ago. I know as I age my tattoos are going to change but so is my body and so will your body even if you do not have any tattoos. I will always show my tatts. They are part of me.

My friend is 48 and got her tattoo when she was 18. It is a butterfly "hatching" out of a heart and it is on her inner forearm. It is faded now. The major colors are red (heart) and green and blue (butterfly).
When she was in nursing school years ago, she was treated poorly because she had a tattoo in a visible place. She had to cover it to attend classes. :(
As I said, it is faded now and the red is almost gone out of the heart. She has actually had blue hairs grow out of the blue parts before (I've heard of others having "colored" hairs grow out of their tattoos too over time). She has talked about getting it redone, but hasn't yet. She has 5 other tattoos now in various places.

i am young and so are my tattoos but i have a few books out there having to do with tattoos and many of the tattooed women from the 1920's were again pictured later in life and their tattoos still looked good. the key is how well you take care of your tattoos and your body in general. i met a lady at a convention who is covered in penis tattoos and she has to be 50+ years old and her tattoos look GREAT. she is in one of my tattoo books (when she was in her 20s) and her tattoos look the same now as they did then. her skin is a little less firm but that is to be expected whether you have tattoos or not. the key is to STAY OUT OF THE SUN!!

I'm not "old" yet, 33, but I have been getting tattoos for 15 years, and I take great care of them. A few of them have faded, but I think that was more the artist technique than the art itself. Some of the others look just like new, no color fade or anything. And yes I have thought about what they will look like when I'm 80, they will probably look wrinkly because my skin will be wrinkly, and I will still love each and every one! 24 tatts and counting...

I've heard that they age along with the skin, as the skin starts to form creases so will the tattoo. They also loose their colour and become a bit dull.

Okay, first of all I am not 40, 50 or 60.....lol....But I will tell you that tattoos don't change. They look different becuase of your skin. For example, After a prganancy, if you have a tatto on your belly or lower back, it might get stretched or have stretch marks in it. or when you get, wrinkle can make your tattoos look gross too
Hope it helps
