The biggest difference is the Church of England recognizes the Archbishop of Canterbury as its universal leader, whereas Catholics recognize the Pope, the Bishop of Rome, as their leader. There is also a significant difference in theology, particularly with regards to the Sacraments (ordination, marriage, confession, and Eucharist), and the Scripture.

Both are Christian faiths. The Catholic church is rich in traditions and teaching that go back 2000 years. Ironically, and sadly, some Protestants tend to forget that when they pick up a Bible (say a King James) they are picking up a series of books selected by the Catholic Church about 400ad.Bishop Polycarp (martyr) wrote his Epistle to the Philippians in the 1st century. It is a wonderful piece of sacred Scripture though the church did not canonize it. The Catholic Church is rich in true church history and the works of the church fathers. There are over 29,000 Protestant denominations (including a vast amount of Baptist denominations). Lutheran and Protestants hold dear the doctrine of "Sola Scritura". This doctrine disregards the oral traditions of the past. And these oral traditions of the Church became the basis of the New Testament. "Therefore, brethren, stand fast and hold to the traditions which you have been taught, whether by word or our epistle": 2 Thessalonians 3:15. Protestants and Catholics are brothers and sisters in Christ. I recently came back to the Church and I find it rich in truth and I regret giving up the faith for so long.

Church of England was once under the umbrella of the Catholic Church. So there are more similarities than differences.
The split was over rediculous reasons. Henry VIII wanted a divorce. Since the pope wouldn't grant him permission, he split from the Holy See and declared himself head of church and state.
As far as beliefs we are very similar. Since we all started out from the same place.
Steps have been taken towards reconcilliation. But the same actions the American Anglican Church has taken that has cause a whoopla in their home overseas, keeps that reconcilliation "in the works" rather than a reality.
Maybe you will join me in prayer for reunification?
My friend Solarius? I have to disagree with you about the Blessed Mother. One of the biggest churches in England is Mary's Cathedral at Cambridge. Among others...

The Church of England is a Protestant church. They are not under the authority of Rome, and hence, not under the authority of the Roman Catholic Pope. The C of E does not venerate the Blessed Virgin Mary in quite the same way as the Catholic Church. However, the rites of both churches are similar in many ways.
