The East Village has lots of little shops/independant designer boutiques. Try Tokio 7 at 64 East 7th Street at First Avenue - it's a designer consignment shop. It can get very crowded, but you can find things here you won't see anywhere else. If you like Denim, look at Famous Friends at 616 East 9th Street (between Avenues B and C)

In New York - there is a strip on Broadway between Houston and Canal street that has every label you could possibly imagine. It's Broadway, NOT West Broadway (this is all very high end fashion in SOHO). I usually take the subway to Houston, get out and walk down Broadway to Canal and stop at stores I like along the way. Some stores are a little junky, but I have purchased some awesome stuff that I wore until it fell apart and didn't care if someone spilled on me a the club because it was cheap. have fun!! Once you hit canal, turn right and there is every kind of jewelry you can think of. It used to have great handbags, but the cops have cracked down. I suggest the park at the Statue of Liberty ferry (bowling green subway stop) for bags. super knock offs.

You will always find brand name clothing at a reasonable price at the locations I've listed below:

Marshalls, T.J.Maxx, Century 21, Fulton Street Mall in Brooklyn, 125 Street in Harlem, Graham Avenue in Brooklyn, Knickerbocker Avenue in Brooklyn, Fordham Road in the Bronx, Jamaica Avenue in Queens.

You will see people wearing those brands. Stop and ask them where the stores are located.
