My 5 yo received a bike as a gift but can't use the hand brakes and refuses to ride it.

I have been thinking about converting it to foot brakes. It would need to be able to be done for a reasonable price.

Provided that this is a bike with a single gear, it could be done. It is not something that I've ever done though since it might cost just as much as buying a new bike. You would need to replace the rear wheel and add a clamp to the chainstay of the bike. It doesn't sound like much, but I'd expect the wheel to go for about $50 and at least $20 in labor.

Five years old is a little young to start using hand brakes. Is the bike the right size? Maybe it's something you put away until he grows into it. However, the brake levers might be adjustable. I'd try that first. It may be possible to move them inward in order to make the reach required to engage them less daunting for a five year old.

There are categories of threads. Your interior of reach motorbike save would desire to locate one for you the two new or used for $50-eighty. you will additionally choose some brakes and levers $40, cables and housings $5 and clamp-on cable guides and housing stops and adjusting barrels $10-20.
