I have a sore and tense shoulder and neck for the past 10 days. It is especially sore right where the shoulder meets the neck. When I touch the area it feels as though it is bruised. I also have the need to crack on my neck on that side now, which I never did before. A hot compress or massages do not seem to help it. Can this be related to depression or is it likely more severe? ( I was diagnosed with clinical depression this year) I cannot recall any repetive movements that I make and I do not work. PS: I am seeing a massage therapist for the first time in a couple weeks but I would like some relief until then.

Alot of times depression can cause you to become very tense and sore. I know it does for me. Just keep doing the warm compresses and massages, it could take a while but should ease some of the tension. Try not to crack your neck!! I'm sure going to a massage therapist will help alot. If it doesn't get better, I would suggest going to your doctor! Good luck and hope you feel better soon!

Yes, depression can cause physical symptoms. Your shoulder and neck pain can come with the stress the symptoms cause. If you try a mild anti-depressant and the pain goes away you can be sure of the root cause. Then if that doesn't work you can look into a physical cause.

Yes, depression can cause all kinds of aches and pains. I was wondering if you were on any medication for your depression. My mother takes cymbalta and says it has helped her shoulder pain alot, but she also feels funny if she misses a dose of it. I know some people do not want to be addicted to any sort of medications like that, but a doctor may be able to help you out if you wanted to try whatever they thought may help you

YES, ABSOLUTELY!!! Anxiety and depression can cause all kinds of physical symptoms, though I would suggest checking in with your physician just in case. My chiropractor suggests using cold therapy instead of heat. The pain is likely caused by inflammation of the muscle tissue... which can be made worse by heat packs. Also, meditation, proper nutrition, and relaxation techniques may be helpful for long term relief. You are doing a very good thing by getting started with massage therapy. Not only will that help with your tense muscles, but it should help you relax. Enjoy!

There was a time I went through depression and had the same symptoms. I was told by my doctor that depression definately puts stress on the body and you tend to tense up your neck and shoulders.

Yes absolutely. Depression has painful physical symptoms as well as the painful psychological ones. How are your depression symptoms? Are you feeling well? Or better yet ask yourself WHY you are you depressed? Sometimes depression is a signal that you are not on the right path. I wish you well.
