I want to work, but my 18mo. old is having to receive treatments and testing for a rare condition. On top of that, I'm going through a very nasty divorce. DHR says I have to get a job, but I'm so stressed out that I just don't think I can hold down a 9-5 job right now. I've started having anxiety attacks. Besides, who would hire someone that has to take time off regularly to go to the hospital w/ their child?

I don't know what skills you have, but you sound a lot like I did a few years ago.

I worked part-time. I, too, had a child who needed extensive medical treatment. Not to mention the office visits.

First, see your MD or go to a psychotherapist to get your anxiety level under control. There are meds for panic attacks.

Then go out and look for a part-time job. You are right. Once you tell the truth about what's going on to an employer looking to fill a full-time position, they will tend to shy away from you.

But, with a part-time job, you have more flexibility.

You need to hook up with a psychiatrist first of all. See if anxiety medicine, maybe some other form of medicine could help you. The state I live in its very hard to get benefits, so I don't think that you could, but if your condition was bad enough and your doctor thought you'd be unable to work due to it, then potentially you could receive benefits.
To tell you the truth though, you should be looking for a job. I see things are stressful for you, but the likely hood of you receiving benefits is very small. See if your state offers assistance with child care and Health Insurance, and when you look for a job, look for one that is either flexible with hours, or interview and let them know your situation. It may make it harder to find a job, but if your employer knows up front that your child is in need of alot of care, then they could work with you.

I don't know where you are, but we have a lawyer here in Dallas, Texas, Ronald D. Honig, who advertizes regularly on tv. He handles SSI and Social Security Disability Cases. Tell him your circumstance and, if he can't help you, he will probably recommend the best course of action or a person who can: Ronald D. Honig @ 1.800.359.0019 or 214.368.0777.

I doubt you would qualify for temporary disability but talk to your doc about it and see if he he would sign the paperwork for you to try to apply. The thing to remember is it takes months to get approved. Talk to your doc about this. Also have the doc give you meds for the anxiety attacks too and recommend other things for you.
