What types of insurances are required to purchase for renting car ?

Depends on the coverage your purchasing - you can purchase Damage Waiver (covers your deductible - where your personal auto insurance still is primary); you can purchase liability coverage. Usually liability coverage is around $9.99/day, Damage Waiver about $5.99/day - it depends on the rental car company.

Remember though - your personal auto insurance DOES cover a rental car - it's not necessary to purchase the additional insurance. The prices they charge for insurance - if you do purchase full coverage from the rental car company - could be up to $20/day. Does that sound reasonable to you? It's not. It's how rental car companies make money - so they like to push it on you.

Basic liability comes with the vehicle. You are liable for any and all damage to the vehicle itself. You can normally purchase a waiver for that. The prices vary from one location to the next and each rental company has their own rates. Typically it ranges between $20 and $35 per day in addition to the rental rate.

If you have full coverage insurance on your own car it will often cover rentals of less than 30 days as well. Check with your insurance agent. Your liability coverage may be either primary or additional coverage to the rental company's. Check the rental agreement on that.

If you have a "Gold" or better credit card, rental damage coverage is often included with the card. Check your cardholder agreement to see what your coverage is.

Before you buy or authorize insurance on a rental car thru the rental agency, contact YOUR insurance company. You may find that you are already covered to your deductible limit.

Auto insurance from rental companies is typically very expensive when compared to regular policies it is the equivilent of buying an 'extended warranty' at electronics stores (ie: not the best value in town).
