Lots cheaper and more dependable.

Standard Poodle. Not the little toy poodles. Poodles do not shed, and if trained to do so will act as a family watch dog.
I helped my uncle pick out and train his poodle for the same reasons.
Poodles and a few other breeds don't shed like other dogs, but still do lose fur. But it is more like the way humans lose hair. So it is a lot less noticeable. People also tend to be less allergic to these type of dogs.
A dog who bites an intruder is not necessarily put down. Our dog bit a burglar a few years back. We still have our dog. Animal control was contacted and our dog was quarantined for a few days, but that was it. The burglar tried to sue us, but then dropped the case.

I would say St. Poodle or Labradoodle. I currently have a Labradoodle who lives in the house with us and she is a very light shedder, but let someone who is not part of the family try to walk in the house without knocking or ringing the doorbell! I have extended family that have always been comfortable just walking in before Abadi came along, but now if they try it she will keep them at the front door until we come and tell her it's okay. I have no doubt that if one of our family members were being threatened she would attack, but it's also nice not having to worry about her around children....she absolutely loves them! The St. Poodle can make a good protector for the family too as they can be vicious if their family was threatened. This breed is greatly misunderstood. Many people think of them as "frilly froo froo" dogs which they are not. They were originally bred to hunt.

The Maltese is perfect for you
The Maltese is gentle, trusting, and obedient. They are typically good natured and amiable and love to be held and cuddled. They will tolerate other pets, but are not suitable for inconsiderate or ill-behaved children. They most often will establish a close bond with one person. They do not do well when left alone for extended periods of time. They may be over-protective of their owner, family, and territory, and bark or bite if they perceive a threat. They are a fearless, vigorous, and agile breed. The Maltese commit themselves fully to their owner and families.
The Maltese has an elegant mantle of long, silky hair. The coat is straight, lacks an undercoat, and is pure bright white in color. They are non-shedding. Their luxurious cloak of white is the hallmark of the Maltese.
Good Luck

ALL dogs she3d to some degree.
MOST dogs will protect your family.
Do some research and narrow it down to a ew breeds you like and then get lots of info on each breed from someone who breeds them and has them. Make sure your lifestyle will fit with the dog and that you have the time for training and grooming and such.
All dogs require a large time commitment and take effort to train and polish their manners.

All dogs shed even those poodle mixes even is raving about. You're better off with a security system, it doesnt shed and wont be euthanized if it does catch a burgler. But if you really do want a dog I suggest a Standard Poodle, I have 2 and they are actually the biggest babies ever but you wouldnt know it from their barks. They sound just like Rottweilers and they shed very little, more like how people shed, but you do have to brush them or take them to the groomers because they will get matts.

Our Yorkie hardly sheds at all. He is not a minature and weighs 10lbs. He is fiesty and barks to let us know whenever anyone pulls into the drive. I read where a Yorkie once severely bit a house burgler and held the burgler until police arrived. He was protecting his 75 yr old owner. Good dog eh? :)

Unfortunately, the only breeds that don't shed tend to be toy breeds, such as Maltese, Yorkshire Terriers, Poodles, etc. They're on the small side, but they can be trained as a 'watch dog', but not as a 'guard dog'. (the difference being that watch dogs will only alert you to any dangerous/suspicious activity, but guard dogs will actually attack on command)
However, if you only need a watch dog, then a lot of the terrier breeds (Scottish, Westie, etc.) don't shed, are bigger than the aforementioned toy breeds, and will do a good job of alerting and protecting you. You can also look for any dog mixed with a Poodle, such as a Labradoodle.

what your looking for is a wheaten terrier. they are a nonshedding breed. they do require a bit of grooming htey get as big as a lab or even a little smaller depending upon the breeder. as to protecting your family if you get a male you shouldn't really have a problem there are training courses you can take to make him a guard dog. I also recommend taking an obedience course so that they will obey you and only you.

All dogs shed but if you want a dog that shed very little hair and that will protect your family get a Giant Schnauzer. They are very protective of their families but make sure he know's you are his owner or else they will try and dominate you.
