Not in a million years. Because, first of all the civil liberties of all humans would be taken advantage of. Secondly, as someone said before, mental illness, is not necessarily a harmful or violent thing, if thats what you are suggesting. I think you should test some of these natural born Americans in regards to their mental health if you want to test the immigrants. Might be some scary results. Thirdly, allowing that kind of screening process only allows government interest into civilian life more deeply and would probably cause more harm than good. Finally, who, cares? There will always be crazy people who commit some random acts of violence and thats just the nature of humanity. So, we just have to learn how to help people when we see a problem , instead of insulting them for a laugh. I know some people cant be helped, but a few kind words could save some peoples lives , if you think of it that way.

Yes, but this is not as easy to find out since people can be hiding symptoms of mental illness- also many times people develop mental illness over time, just b/c today they are consider healthy does not mean that in 10 years they won't be schizoprenic.

If you can test for it and it can show up yes. But how do you determine which mental illness is a problem. Do you dscriminate against them all? Do you accept people with depression but deny people with bi polar disease? Do you deny all of them? It is a slippery slope.
If this was about Cho, he immigrated to this country in 1992. He might not have shown anything that would have raised alarm bells. As it is now, immigrants will deadly communicable diseases such as AIDs TB etc cannot become green card holders in this country and some who aleady permanent residents who have HIV are denied re-entry into the country

I'm going to give you a somewhat wimpy "yes" answer. Not wimpy in the sense of running background checks and not letting in people who raise red flags -- I absolutely feel this needs to be part of the process -- I'm just not sure what YOU mean by the question. What is there to check, how do we check it, and who evaluates who can and can't come here? These are things we need to decide on.

All LEGAL immigrants get a complete physical exam BEFORE they get their visa. If the examining physician suspects a mental health issue the visa applicant is sent for a full psych eval.

What the heck? Do we make sure all developing fetuses don't have mental problems beofre we allow them to be born? Didn't think so. Don't be silly...people with mental problems are not necessarily dangerous. If they are, those around them have a responsibility to get help for them. It's really quite simple.

Believe it or not your mental health status can change over time. Symptoms of diseases such as schizophrenia do not emerge until the late teens early twenties.
My answer implied that whether or not we check, there is not guarantee for continued mental health. To my knowledge that is part of the application process all ready, but like I said things change.

yes we should along with their education status and their social standing in their home countries. Now you mean immigrate, to settle here, I think it should be for the migrants who only come here for work every so often as well.
