This is a good question. Most of the trash generated today goes to the land fills and many other Dump yards. Some are even buried underground and even thrown away in the ocean. Some of the people are not even bothered about this issue.
These dump yards .......... cause environmental pollution.

Waste collected for recycling is sorted, graded and recycled as appropriate.

Non recycleable waste is often dumped in land fills, some of it is incinerated, some of it is even loaded into huge barges and shipped to countries like Indonesia where it's dumped in open dumps and scavenged by local people, as in this picture - http://www.dfait-maeci.gc.ca/canada-magazine/issue30/site/images/current/back_waste.jpg

The majority of household waste can be recycled. Countries that are keyed up on recycling send less than 20% of their waster to landfills, the rest is recycled - countries like Germany, Japan, Sweden and Switzerland.
