Basset - I have seen more labs with issues than any others

Momma - That was my hope for people to see its not just pits. I have an in with the animal control officers in KY that are very upset about the negative press on pits.

Susan - you are 100% correct. This is where we say not to breed your pet and refuse to give advise to hilljacks on Yahoo. Make them spend the money on a vet and take care of the pet. Properly socializing a litter of puppies is much more difficult than you think. I make my rescues available for adoption when they are ready. Not necessarily by age. We rescued a litter of labs about a month ago and the foster stated how bad they were. Some got better being at adoption but I grabbed one and took it to my house. He will goto adoption for the socializing but not adoptable.

I read an editorial in the paper a couple of months ago that blamed back yard breeders for this problem. Basically, the article said byb's don't temperament test their dogs before breeding, and don't screen the families they sell to. Conclusion: we get vicious dogs. The article was about the statistic that Golden Retrievers are responsible for most of the unprovoked dog bites, but I suppose the same reasoning could be applied to labs.

Yup, anyone with sense knows any breed can do this. I often try to tell people this. It seems most of the people who have answered this question have sense!

I wonder if you will get through to any of the misguided/prejudiced/ignorant people who thinks certain breeds are inherently dangerous. They probably won't post on here sadly.

Thank you! I have an American Staffordshire Terrier, and I always have to hear everyone's opinions on my sweet dog. It's about time the news actually recognized another type of dog attack!

Yeah so what... EVERY dog of EVERY breed is capable of attacking its all in how they are raised, and treated and bred. I have no illusions about Labs being somehow inherently benign, thats just ignorant people who think only certain breeds are capable of such acts.. All doga are predators, all dogs have sharp teeth and strong jaws and all dogs have the natural instinct to hunt and kill and fight to protect their territory... if left untrained any dog is capable of injuring or even killing other dog, animals, or people.

...and some priests molest children...no BREED of dog is bad...just certain dogs are aggressive...some due to shi**y upbringing by the owner and some with nutty brains. I have two black labs and one pit and they are all happy well adjusted dogs...this story is tragic, but really means nothing.

Not surprising. I've met some pretty nasty labs.

Condemn the deed, not the breed.

Any breed can do that.
