Okay, Charlene, I've been there and done that. Here's the skinny: The doctors will wait for the body to spontaneously abort the fetus. The thinking being that the less they interfere, the better for the mom. In most cases, the body's "fail-safe" mechanisms will kick in and labor will commence. A sad and painful time will be had by all. After the spontaneous abortion occurs, the mom needs to get back to the doctor to be certain that all of the pregnancy has been discharged; otherwise, there is a high risk of infection if any tissue is not completely expelled. If all the tissue is not expelled, there will have to be a dilation & curettement performed, better known as a D & C.
IF the body does not do it's natural job, the doctors will induce labor by whatever means they favor (in my case a chemical called "prostaglandin" was used to induce labor) and cause the body to expel the fetus.
Whatever the means, it will be sad for the mom and dad. If they want to have other children, they need to be certain that they have the mom checked by an Ob/Gyn to be certain that she is healthy and ready to try again.

The regular procedure would be called a D&C.A D&C is similar to that of a abortion procedure.I have never heard of a Dr. not advising that the patient have a D&C if the baby is dead. They put the woman at risk .Unless the woman refuses to have the procedure done or if she has already begun to bleed by herself in which case some Dr.'s let the body do its own thing because most of the time the woman will pass the tissue & stuff when the miscarraige takes place. Its really a sad thing. My regards.

This is not so unusual. The doctor probably told her to come back within a certain amount of time, if the baby doesn't miscarry on its own.
My friend just went through this. She had to return to the dr. in one week and they checked the baby's heartbeat again. When it wasn't there, she was giving a prescription to bring on the miscarriage plus pain killers. They checked her again two days later. The baby was gone, but the doctor thought that her lining was still too thick and needed to come out, so he gave her the same medications again. She will go back in two more days. If the medications don't work, she will need to have a D&C.

I'm so very sorry for her loss, I had a miscarriage myself...
When the pregnancy isn't viable anymore (meaning that the baby has died), some women miscarry on their own... and some require a procedure called a D&C (dilation and curettage), in which the tissue is taken out surgically.
Again, so sorry for her loss.

Many times, women are sent home to pass the fetus, naturally. Such was the case with my d-in-law & my cousin. The body has its way of expelling a fetus naturally, when the pregnancy has come to an early end.

She will probably miscarry on her own. She will probably have cramps and a really bad, heavy period. If this doesn't happen in the next few weeks then she needs to go back to the doctor, they will need to do a D&C to remove any tissue that is left.

Sometimes, at that early on, they may wait for it to pass on its own with her next period. Other times they will do a d & c to scrap the inside of the uterus. It depends on the specific situation and the doctor. I'm sorry for your brother and his girlfriend.

I was told by my sister-in-law and my best friend that u have to go in and get your uterus cleaned out or scrapped as they called it, after a miscarriage. I don't know if there r certain circumstances that may apply to make that not necessary however.

Generally at such an early stage, your body with naturally miscarry and there is no procedure necessary. This is most likely why they sent her home.
