I have 256MB ram. However, some applications refuse to start unless they detect at least 384MB memory on my system. Is there a software that can borrow 128MB from my hard disk so that according to Windows, I have 384MB ram?

Well, by default windows uses a portion of the hard drive to handle the overflow of data from the physical ram. This is called "virtual memory" and can be changed in the "Performance" tab of your system settings.

But, this will not cause the program to recognize that you have 384Mb of ram installed and there is no program that will fudge the numbers for you.

Your best bet would be to go out and buy another stick of 256 memory, it should only run you about 20-40 bucks and the installation is easy.

Plus, your computer and games will run a lot faster after the upgrade.

If use virtual memory (these settings are in Control Panel) it will make these programs able to run, but they probably won't anyways. This happened to me with my free Soundbooth Beta. It ran the check, and said I didn't have enough RAM. Never mind that I had enough virtual memory allocated to run Quake 4, it was stubborn and wouldn't install. If it's a desperate problem, try upgrading your RAM by adding another card, at least another 128 MB (but that's so miserable that I'd reccomend at least a 256 MB, unless you're on a super-shrimpy budget)

Not really, RAM is so cheap, add another 256MB RAM at least.
