I never leave my grandaughter alone for a minute even now. I just don't want a dog that will get jealous and I have to isolate when she is here. I need one that is a guardian not a rival.

NO never. You are the babysitter. Contain your pet while babysitting.

The fact of the matter is, NO dog should EVER be left alone with a child - not a rottie, not a retriever, not a chihuahua, not anything. It simply isn't worth the risk. Even if you know the dog well, you can't predict te future especially between little -uns and dogs!

Toddlers especially are prone to investigating things by poking them - which can be annoying to the most laid back of dogs, with disastrous consequences.

If you're taking the dog with you babysitting, or there's a dog in the house you babysit at, never leave the two alone, and preferably keep them at arms length - if someone else's kid was under my care I wouldn't want to give them ANY reason to say I'd been irresponsible.

Has the dog been raised with small children? Tested with them? Is the dog DOG aggressive? Toddler's high pitched voices and unsteady movements can frighten a dog that is not accustomed to them, and dogs bite out of fear. Also, an exuberant dog of any size can knock a child down. So, it really depends on the dog & the child!
No dog should be left with unsupervised with a child.

ANY dog needs to be monitored around small children. For the safety of the child AND the dog.

Puppy gates work wonders.
I don't trust ANY dog around a toddler when not under strict supervision.
How many times would you let someone stick their finger in your eye before you smacked them????
