The keys to the kingdom given to Peter was the privilege of being the first to preach in Acts. Peter was talking through the power of the Holy Spirit. When speaking through His authority, then if we bind something on earth, then there will be agreement in heaven. If we loose something, there will be agreement in heaven as well.
What Jesus is saying is that when you are under the authority and power of the Holy Spirit, that there will be complete alignment with the will of God--because the Holy Spirit and God are One.

In this verse, Jesus is speaking directly to the Apostle Peter, and indirectly to the other apostles. Jesus' words meant that Peter would have the right to enter the kingdom himself, would have general authority therein symbolized by the possession of the keys, and preaching the gospel would be the means of opening the kingdom of heaven to all believers and shutting it against unbelievers. The book of Acts shows us this process at work. By his sermon on the day of Pentecost (Acts 2:14-40), Peter opened the door of the kingdom for the first time. The expressions "bind" and "loose" were common to Jewish legal phraseology meaning to declare forbidden or to declare allowed.

By giving Peter the keys to the kingdom, Jesus is giving him authority. For someone in a leadership position to give the keys to their office to someone is symbolic of them turning the authority of that office to that person. Jesus is making Peter the leader of the Church. He tells Peter "You are rock and upon this rock I will build my Church." When Jesus tell him "whatsoever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven; and whatsoever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven," He is giving him the authority to govern the Church, He is making him the first Pope.

It means that God gives us complete control over the influences that come our way good or bad. If we use good influences with the best of intentions, our lives will flourish. If we pray that evil influences will be bound, they cannot touch us! This applies both in Heaven and Earth, though I realize there's nothing bad about Heaven, I used it in the same passage to show how Good will be loosed both here and there, and Evil will be bound both here and there.

I believe if you "bind" specific demonic forces from their operations in your life, and the lives of those you are praying for..they are bound..both here and everywhere.
Likewise if you lose the angels..they are put to the task..both here on the earth and in the heavens (where the demonic forces operate).
This is the reason it is so important to know exactly what you are dealing with in prayer. Some things are not what they seem..for instance..a person who is shy..is actually...in fear.
So to pray..you would bind the spirit of fear and its operation in that person's life.

When Jesus said that He wasn't talking to us. He was talking to the Apostle named Simon, whom we now know as Peter
Jesus replied, "Blessed are you, Simon son of Jonah, for this was not revealed to you by man, but by my Father in heaven. And I tell you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of Hades will not overcome it. I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven; whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven." Matthew 16:17-19 NIV
In biblical times a key was a symbol of authority, not something carried by the janitor. See this passage from the Old Testament:
"In that day I will summon my servant, Eliakim son of Hilkiah. I will clothe him with your robe and fasten your sash around him and hand your authority over to him. He will be a father to those who live in Jerusalem and to the house of Judah. I will place on his shoulder the key to the house of David; what he opens no one can shut, and what he shuts no one can open. I will drive him like a peg into a firm place; he will be a seat of honor for the house of his father. All the glory of his family will hang on him: its offspring and offshoots—all its lesser vessels, from the bowls to all the jars. Isaiah 22: 20-24 NIV
Jesus was telling Simon, whose name He changed to Peter, which means Rock, that He would build His Church on him as the first pope. (The word "pope" was not used until much later, but the office existed from the beginning.)

NO - O - O - O! ! ! Heaven is experienced on earth. It SHOULD be your unique, abstract, ideal experience, and CAN be if you give up your confining beliefs that override that ideal. We're programmed and limited by our child's environmental experience with others and learn to believe all kinds of nonsense to survive. Whatever we believe, reality reflects - like a mirror. The keys equal the clues in the meaning of his words. Translate his words metaphorically - we bind ourselves to a repeated external experience - we LITERALLY live by "faith." We're our own nightmare until we learn how to stop.

Well, I think the keys to the kingdom of heaven are the teachings Jesus gave to his disciples. He also gave them the power to heal and to cast out demons. Also, when we speak with our mouths, and believe what we speak, we have the power to make what we say come true (I think especially through prayer). Therefore, if whatever we pray for on this earth, God and Hie angels will hear it in heaven, and God will answer those prayers for us , on earth.

This is in reference to the priesthood power of Jesus Christ. He bestowed the power to seal on earth and in heaven. Ever wonder why civil marriages say "til death do you part"? This is because the person performing the marriage does not hold that authority to marry them for time and all eternity.

from my point of view , it is what we use or loose here on Earth for the glory of heaven will be given to us in heaven. so if we decide not to sing unto Jesus then we have bound that gift here and shall not be given that gift later. if we are not willing to use anything God has given us now for the glory of His kingdom we will not be able to use it later.
