i keep hearing how god gave up his son to forgive us of our sins. but this doesn't make any sense when you think about it. after jesus died, he ascended into heaven, right? so god gets to keep jesus? that hardly sounds like he's paying for our sins. so what did god give up? the flesh form of jesus? god is not interested in the flesh though. he only wants our souls. also, how is jesus paying for our sins if he went to heaven. he suffered for a few days to make up for all sin for every man, woman and child, past, present and future, and then he got to go to heaven for all eternity. sorry, that doesn't make sense. if jesus was truly taking on the burden of all of mankind's sins, shouldn't he have gone to hell for all eternity? wouldn't the idea of god giving up jesus make more sense in that aspect? to say he gave up jesus implies that god is forever separated from jesus and this is not the case as scripture tells us. can anyone explain this?

penny, the implication of the new testament is that jesus died for our sins. you can't deny that. so to say that god gave jesus is the same saying he gave up jesus.

exceptional, what do you think the word sacrafise means? if someone asked you to make a sacrafise, they're asking you to give something up?

also on the topic of giving up... do you remember what the bible says about the last supper, as far as what jesus said to his diciples. i believe he said, this is my body, which will be GIVEN UP for you and for all. then he took the wine and said this is my blood which will be GIVEN UP for you and for all, so that sins may be forgiven.

Nothing.

Of course, that doesn't matter to the Christians. They don't care about facts or logic, just as long as the story can pull some heart strings. Religion gains and keeps converts through emotional manipulation. The "sacrifice" story, though stretching it a bit, does provoke those emotions.

II have never read anything that said he gave up his son maybe this is someone words you are quoting. The real matter is he sacrificed his son and you try sacrificing your son for the same people who are spitting on him and see how easy it will be. Many people make the very broad assumption that God and Jesus some how does not have feelings. Like a nail through his hand someone is less painful than a nail through your own. The bible says the wages of sin is death not hell so Jesus paid the sin of death.........hell is a whole different judgement. My advice read the bible for yourself stop taking others interrepations people will mislead you everyday. Ask God to reveal the truth to you and it may not happen right away but he will show you. And if you seriously want to ask God this same question that you have asked her you better be prepared for an overwheling answers that may take you years to understand. Another hint.....notice in the bible that the people who went wrong were those who tired to put God in a humans frame of mind the first thing you have to allow yourself to think is that he thinks so way above your level that to even get you to see what he is talking about he has to break it down to such simple terms that people still are like how can this be?

Jesus was tempted to sin in every way, just like us.

If Jesus did sin, He would have failed.
He would have been separated from God and sent to Hell with the rest of us.

That is why Satan tried so hard to stop Him.

Also, Jesus and God had a perfect relationship.
And when Jesus took our sins on the cross, God (for the first time in eternity) could not even look at Jesus. This was a terrible moment (one we can not fully understand), and that is why Jesus cried out on the cross "Father, why have you forsaken Me?". He knew why, but in anguish He still could not but ask.

i keep hearing how god gave up his son to forgive us of our sins -- I don't think he gave "up" His Son, rather he "gave" his son.

after jesus died, he ascended into heaven, right? so god gets to keep jesus? that hardly sounds like he's paying for our sins. -- Prior to the life of Jesus, atonement for sin was made by the blood sacrafice of an "unblemished" animal, typically a lamb. Jesus was sent as God's Lamb, perfect and unblemished and born of a virgin, as the ultimate sacrafice and the permanent attonement of man's sin.

god is not interested in the flesh though. he only wants our souls. also, how is jesus paying for our sins if he went to heaven. he suffered for a few days to make up for all sin for every man, woman and child, past, present and future, and then he got to go to heaven for all eternity -- Indeed, he is interested in our souls. And as far as Jesus only suffering for a few days, He gave what we all cherish as the most precious thing we have, our very life on earth. What more can be given?

sorry, that doesn't make sense. if jesus was truly taking on the burden of all of mankind's sins, shouldn't he have gone to hell for all eternity? -- Now that is a very clever and interesting quesiton!! However, no. Again, He gave his life as a living sacrafice, was perfect and unblemished. While his physical body "became" the sin of the world on the cross, sin died with His flesh. When Jesus cried out, "My God, My God, why hast though forsaken me?", that was the moment Jesus became the sin of the world. God then turned his back on sin, not Jesus. The wages of sin is death. Sin died on the cross.

to say he gave up jesus implies that god is forever separated from jesus and this is not the case as scripture tells us. -- Again, I think you may be misunderstanding the concept. God didn't "give up" his son, he "gave" his son, as a living sacrafice.

These are my explanations and beliefs. I think you're questions are legitimate and very thought provoking! Ultimately, the truth exists. If it's the truth you're looking for you'll find it. Also, I think if you're looking to dispel the truth, you'll be able to do that based on the lack of physical, tangible "proof". Lazerus, from Hell, asked that he be allowed to inform his brother of the perils of not believing, to be able to speak to him from the dead. God said that he had given him Moses and the prophets, and if he wasn't willing to believe them, there would essentially be no amount of "proof" they'd be willing to accept. Ultimately, it really is up to us to make our own decisions. I believe it was intended that way.

Jesus is one and only God...so 'God does not get to keep Jesus'

He died on the cross for all of our sins, and we just need to accept Him as our Savior. He died in a brutal way. He paid for your sins too, you just need to accept this gift.

You can decline His offer. You have a free will. God has been doing business according to His plan, your personal opinions about the operations will not stop Him from executing His plane. Use your free will wisely. ; )

I have been asking the same question for years. And if,as they say, jesus IS god that makes the "sacrifice"that much more meaningless. I i gave someone a thousand dollars, that would be a lot of money, but if Bill Gates gave a thousand dollars,it represents didley squat to him...no sacrifice!

The problem is in the sentence syntax. God did not give up his son...he GAVE his son. It was for human sins that Jesus was tortured and died.

No, I cannot explain this to someone with an attitude so rigid and I think your mind is already made up.

You've just described a lot of questions I have had. I hope you get some good answers.

I have had a real struggle understanding Christianity, and it has never been explained satisfactorily to me. When I read the Bible, I get a lot of conflicting information and behavior I wouldn't want to worship.

He triumphed over Satan taking the keys of Hell and Death out of Satan's grip.

He came out victorious. He was fighting for the souls of all men down in the belly of hell.

He suffered as a man, beaten and bruised, felt the sting of death, was forsaken and went to hell.

Every sickness and disease, every affliction and sorrow a man could ever experienced, Jesus took it all in one blow. And I mean every range of emotional turmoil. He was betrayed, denied by his friends, he was falsely accused and lied about, he was mocked and scorned before all the world, he was hated and despised, he was spat upon and whipped, he was thirsty and was given vinegar, he was beaten and bloodied so badly no one even recognized him, he was taken without cause and nailed (not tied) to a cross.

But he was wounded for our transgressions he was bruised for our iniquities : the chastisement of our peace upon him; and with his stripes we are healed.

Some see what others cannot. What we see doesn't mean it is the truth. There was nothing given up but only conceptually. All in the bible is conceptual ideology.

The spiritual aspects of major religions are outdated and primitive. Modern day religions have become the tool for controlling the masses by men with aspiration for power. Man's free will and freedom itself is under attack through religions. Religions go as far as to say man's free will and his life was given to him by a God so this God has the right to control man even use force to control man’s will and then call this choice. The bible’s underline meaning tells us God created man thus own man so God can do whatever he wants with man. God even uses man to kill other men that don't believe in God as creator of everything. Convenient wouldn’t you say? But for whom may I ask?

What is so frighteningly obvious is God has no voice of his own? God is silent and only communicates with his creation through bibles or the like. Only men speak for God there for man is under the control of other man through religion that is sold to a man from birth.

Cannot people see through the smoke and mirrors of religion? You have to subvert man's free will to control him. This can be done through teachings such as religions or you can just drug a man like we are doing in this society everyday. Rather you use the teaching of religions, illegal or prescribed drugs, incarceration or poor education either way you get a man that has weakened abilities to assert his own will to control his own destiny.

Religions have made man's ability to think and reason evil from the start of biblical stories, which is evil in and of it self. I don’t think primitive man even knew the implication of how religions can be used for evil but modern man sure does.

Prove me wrong about this?
