I'm a junior in High School. I want to be a CRNA, I want to know if this is a good plan. I want to go to Worcester State College and get my registered nurse degree. During that time, I'm going to do observation as required for a year at a local hospital. Then after 4 years in that college, I want to go to a program that offers Nurse Anesthesia, most likely I will go to Buffalo State College for 2 years. Sounds good? Will it work?

To become a CRNA, you have to get a 4 year nursing degree, then you have to have 2 years experience as an ICU nurse. Most hospitals require 2 years med-surg before they'll put you in specialty areas, but med-surg isn't a requirement for anesthesia school. Once you have your BSN and 2 years ICU experience, you'll have to find a school for nurse anesthetists. If Buffalo State has a nurse anesthesia program, you can try to get in there. I've heard that anesthesia school is extremely competitive, so work hard, get good grades, and plenty of good references from your job as an RN. You can also take as many critical care continuing education classes as you can while you're working as a nurse. All that looks good on an application. Good luck!
