I'm getting ready to do a very custom sound system in my 03 Eclipse GTS. I will be running a 4-channel amp to 4 type-R Alpine speakers, all rated at 4 ohms. Is it possible to bridge 4 ohm speakers down to 2 ohms (for the extra RMS wattage I can get) without losing the four independent zones (left, right, front, back).

NO! When you do a bridged connection you 're converting 2 channels into 1 channel , so you can't select left or right since there's only one channel now. If you want more power from your amp you need to get 2 ohm speakers (usually very expensive) or get a second amp that way you can still have the divisions of speakers.

Sorry; it's not possible. A 4-ohm speaker is a 4-ohm speaker; that can't be altered. Some people have asked about adding power resistors in parallel to reduce the ohm load to 2 ohms; while this will actually cause the amplifier to produce more power, all the extra power produced will just go toward heating up the resistors.

Your best option in this situation is just to run the amp at 4 ohms.

Jfort, cant do it man, sorry. You only have 4, four ohm speakers. Dont worry, you will be happy with the sound! running that amp at 2 ohms anyways would really stress it, and it would run hot.

all these guys are right, but ask yourself: is the ability to fade the sound that important? stereo l and r, no question, but just how often do you plan on using the fading function. hey, if i'm out to lunch, then forget about it these guys are still right. besides, on alpine amps you get far more quality with the four ohm load, <0.05%THD @ 4ohms vs. 0.8%THD @ 2 ohms. is the extra 10 watts really worth it? not to mention your amp running a lot hotter?
