I have three machines running Vista and haven't had any major problems. Most problems are related to support of older hardware, and since the machine will be new then that shouldn't be an issue. I have both wired and wireless machines and haven't had any networking problems with Vista so far either. For many people the complaint is simply that it's different and so there's a learning curve. Even if your son hates it, have him stick with it for 30 days or so to adjust. Also, I've found a helpful site with good information on learning and using Vista at http://www.windowsvistamagazine.com/US/

Getting used to the changes from Windows XP to Windows Vista will be the hardest. Most of my computers are XP and I am slowly going to Vista. When I first installed Vista I hated it. It sat on one of my computers and I left it alone.
Recently, I installed Vista on one of my laptops and forced myself to learn it. Now, I like it a lot. Like I mentioned, the hardest thing will be to get used to the new look and feel of the way it works. Primarily, all the features you have in XP are available in Vista. Vista runs well just as long as your computer has enough horsepower and ram. Some things look differently, such as the way you start programs. It is more organized. Windows Explorer is much different so the way you browse for files takes a little getting used to.
Wireless capability is just as good if not better than XP. Just yesterday I had to drive around and find an unsecure connection. Being able to find new connections and connect to existing connections is just as easy, and I might suggest that the new wireless connection ability is more stable.
You will probably go through the same love/hate relationship with Vista when you test it out; however, spend a couple of hours just checking it out and get to know where things have changed. Focus on the Destop, My Documents, Windows Explorer, and the Control Panel. The rest of the items are bells and whistles.
Good luck!

If you are thinking VISTA, then get ready to upgrade right out of the box or spend a fortune on the machine. Vista requires at least 1Gb of RAM, and I would say it should be 2Gb. It is a big difference than Windows XP, because there is just so much change in the way they moved everything. You have too much security that reminds me of the Apple PC commercial that has the PC guy with the Security guy standing behind him, while he is talking to the Mac. The Mac asks the PC a question and the Security guy asks the PC if he wants to accept communication from the Mac. Its funny and sounds exactly the way Vista works.

Well it looks better, but there are some major problems...mainly lack of hardware and software support. My friend got a new computer with it, and he has trouble running half of his programs and most of his hardware. But as for wireless, there shouldn't be an issue if the wireless is built in.

Vista is over glorified crap. I ran right out and bought Vista Ultimate, and i couldn't be more sorry.
The DRM is killing me. I can't rip MY PURCHASED CD's to itunes without the DRM fubaring my rip. pop scratch, pop scratch.
none of my dvd viewing software would work, and my photoshop that cost me an arm and a leg last year won't work either.
