It is more than OK, it is the right thing to do. Perhaps thank you isn't enough. Many of our POW"s were tortured by North Vietnam (including John McCain). Vietnam was a complicated situation. Not all North VIetnamese/Viet Cong were torturers. Both sides bear responsibility for the war.
You cannot call it a Republican War. It was "started" by Kennedy and Johnson who were both Democrats. You can trace the war back to the defeat of the French by the Viet Minh when Eisenhower was President. But, Truman allowed the French to stay in Vietname. I don't think you can blame Ike for starting the war, but you can blame him for military trying to fight the war completely the wrong way.
Please don't paint all Vietname Vets as perpetrators of My Lai. That was one incident and it was too much. Few soldiers are that idiotic. That's like saying all Muslims are terrorists or all Communists committed atrocities in Siberia or all Germans are Nazi's. It's that type of stupid thinking that got us involved in and escalated the VIetnam War in the First Place. You are well intentioned, but misinformed.

If someone else put their Azz on the line so they can defend my liberty or my freedom or my security (Well that's what the Government tells my brother and he's Army)... And they believe it, Heck YEAH, thank `em!
As a matter of fact.. NOT just Vietnam Vets, Vets for any war... Vets at ANY peace time, TAKE THE TIME TO THANK THEM! Even when we are at PEACE (can't remember the last time that happened) they were working HARD day-in and day-out to "BE READY" just in case.
Yeah, I think a little "Thank You" will go a LONG way. When I was in the Airport back in January I do remember thanking two guys for the service to the country. They just LOOKED tired and like they had seen hell.... So I tried to make them smile. Hope it worked.
Thank You can calm a LOT of rough, personal waters.

it isn't in any respect incorrect to thank a vet. In my youngsters deployments, we've met alot of Vietnam Vets and they nevertheless sense quite damage that they don't get the popularity they might want to are growing to be. it quite is why they are doing each little thing they could for our returning squaddies now. The Vietnam Vets will not in any respect enable the hot returning vets sense the way they did upon retruning.

Amen, Supercell...
Well, hell yes it's ok to thank a vet. I see vets like those supercell mentioned every day. I work near a V.A. hospital and often transport patients there. Many of them are homeless and are still suffering PTSD and other medical/mental/emotional issues.
How sad it is to see these once proud soldiers in an unforgivable situation. None of them should be where they are, and wouldn't be if the gov't had given half a rat's azs about them in the beginning.
Some have such a look of shame for where they are in life. ..And they shouldn't. They were put there. When I look them in the eye and say, "thank you for your service. you have no idea how much you are appreciated", most of them appreciate it and, for a slight second, the sad eyes have a glint. That's the truth as I've seen it.

Many of the vets of the Vietnam war were drafted, they never asked to go, and when called they served their nation.
Dispite what your beliefs are on the political situation of Vietnam, the veterans deserve the same respect as any other American veteran. Unfortunately the republicans don't see it this way, they have fought for less money towards Veteran's programs since the Vietnam war.

Why stop with nam vets every vet deserves a thanks and a little compassion. As we get older many of our vets from the world wars and korea pass on. The world is losing a vast living history. And simply remembering them once a year isn't enough. If you love your freedom remember the vets that gave it to you.

As a veteran of 28 years, I have to chime in with:
"Yer durn tootin' it's OK!"
Many of the folks who responded before me have stated it very eloquently -- you may disagree with what was going on, but without our veterans, this nation and our world would be a very different place.

Yes. Every vet should be thanked for their service. Keep in mind that you may make them uncomfortable. When people thank me I get embarrassed.

It's not the military people who start wars. By the same token, the German and Japanese peoples should thank their vets, for answering the call to arms.
