There are times where they are helpful, and other times when they aren't.
For example, if someone has an honest question, but if involves a difficult situation, a canned response such as "It just takes faith!" (Or prayer, or whatever...) isn't very helpful.
But when one comes alongside, and identifies with either myself or the situation, is empathetic, and/or applies a Bible passage that is germane to the situation, they can be very helpful.

I find explanations from the average joe almost always a little contrived. When you add religion to the mix, you get a lot of poorly thought out responses. When it's Christianity, you have a lot of churches that were created precisely because they didn't like what someone else teaches. The end result is that very few have any claim at all to representing a tradition of opinion that goes back to Christ. Most of them are just a cacophony of opinions, almost always ill thought-out.

I am very seldom satisfied with the explanations offered by Evangelicals and Roman Catholics. The idea of inerrancy is devastating to a true understanding of the Bible. You have to examine the text just as you would any other ancient writing. But I am often satisfied with answers provided by academic scholars based on textual criticism, the documentary hypothesis, archeology, etc.

Mostly satisfied. Some answers I disagree with. Christian theology is a big subject and there are a variety of opinions on the side issues but we are united for the most part on the essencial thing - that Jesus is Lord and He is the only way to eternal life and abundant life.

Are you satisfied with answers from just one person? Many of us go to a few different people for answers, and yes, most likely Christians but there have been times when we do at least listen to those how don't believe. If you actually opened your mind to it, you would likely understand it a bit more.

No, I don't see it as contrived. When I have questions I ask Christians that I know have a great knowledge of the bible. I seek info from educated believers. When we are first saved we are like babies in Christ. We gotta grow...and the best way to do that is to seek info from believers that have been in God for awhile. God bless you.

If I ask tough biblical questions, I do traditionally go to someone with a master's degree or Ph.D. if I don't try to answer it myself.
They NEVER give contrived answers. Some of the older generations still give padded answers.

It depends on the Christian and their level of maturity in Christ. It takes time to become mature in the things of God, and not all Christians have had the time to grow in wisdom and the knowledge of the Lord.
It's like expecting a toddler to be able to run the Boston Marathon. . .ain't gonna happen. You take each answer, weigh it against your own knowledge of Scripture, and allow the Holy Spirit to guide you in your understanding.

I'm usually not satisfied and I have to research and find the answers myself. Sometimes their answers are solely based on their traditions and religion and are not spiritual. I like to ask God personally and shortly after I always find the answers.

sometimes. I had a so called Christian brother try to explain to me why there was a fiery hell, before it was all over he had steam rolling out his ears and a beat red face. I never got the answer, he slammed his bible shut and told me I must believe, and stormed away.
I hated the fact that he was not even willing to listen to my question, or belief before thumping his bible at me.
