Albannach got it, you pay it forward. When someone asks you for something, or even if they don't ask but you know there's something you can do for them, think about the person who did something for you, and pay it forward.

I had a total stranger do something for me once that I'd never had anyone do, and would never have expected anyone to do; it involved money, and when I asked for her name and address so that I could repay her, she told me that the next time I saw someone in a situation like the one I'd been in, think about her, and help them. Then she walked away. I don't know if she'd seen the movie, or if she was just that kind of person, but I've done it ever since, and I always tell people the same thing. When they say "How can I repay you?" I tell them, "Pay it forward, that's all I ask."

You don't say what the act of kindness was, but a nice thank you note telling the person how much of a difference it made, or how it made you feel is a great way of "repaying" the person. It shows that it was truly appreciated and comes from the heart. Much better than any gift would be. Just remember to be there for that person, if or when needed.

A thank you card? An act of kindness is often a personal and perhaps private transaction. Not everyone knows about it or needs to know about it.

It depends on the situation, but for some of my staff/co-workers, I will give them a thank you card (I keep blank note cards in my desk at all times) and maybe a little bunch of flowers, or a little baggie of candy or chocolate. Sometimes, I will go out of my way to get little gifts for someone who is irreplaceable on a regular basis. For instance, at my last job, I got each of the assistance a little something, one of them loves cats, and I got her a zipper ornament with a kitty paw and a cute kitty card. She loved and loved it. And she had no question of my gratitude and feelings for her value.

Something small, but expressive of your gratitude. Don't make a big deal about it, they likely don't want the world to know.

Good things will just happen to you sometimes, just show an
act of kindness to somebody else that's the best way of
repaying.
And it keeps the chain unbroken, the other person who paid
you a kindness time will come don't force it.

Pay it forward. Perform an act of kindness for someone else (help change a tire...carry a woman's groceries while she tries to manage 4 children...jump start a car battery...the possibilities are endless).

By doing or giving something to them that they would not expect and something that shows them that you are appreciative of them and if it is someone you know something that they really like e.g. flowers or a book, buy them lunch out, lottery ticket etc.
do something for them help with chores, depends how big the thing was that they did for you.

A short note expressing your gratitude will be more valuable than anything you could give the person.
