Does it actually say in the bible not to? Also wouldn't this be a case of selective practice? What other religions ban premarital sex?

Good Question! The reason they still do it is because there doesn't seem to be any real punishment. And we can just repent, right? But.... by biblical doctrine premarital sex is actually considered adultery. As far as the bible goes where it says 'adultery' you should read that as 'any sexual act which involves two unmarried people.' Even later in the New Testament Peter talks about how the act of making one flesh is, in heaven's eyes, the act of marriage recognized in heaven. I've always thought they should teach THAT to kids. I mean if the wife they would have in heaven is the first girl they were with (and no others) they might think more carefully. I know I don't want to spend eternity with my first girlfriend nagging at me. I hope I never die. Scary.

Because the reason for the injunctions against premarital sex no longer apply in a world with perfect contraception and female emancipation.

When these rules were set up - and they're part of kinship law, not really religion - sex meant babies, and unwed pregnancy could easily lead to death. At the very least, the social upheaval would be horrendous.

Nowadays, despite the ghastly figures for teenage pregnancy, most sex doesn't lead to unwanted babies. And there are ways of dealing with that problem too.

And if unmarried women become pregnant, in general they can still support themselves and raise their kids. The situation is far from perfect, but it's a lot better than it was thousands of years ago.

Freedom to have sex without catastrophic consequences is a new phenomenon. It's a step on the road to civilisation. 2,000 year-old rules don't apply to most modern situations, and certainly not this one.

Why is it that even though a religion tells one not to have premarital sex, people still do it?

Almost all of them ban premarital sex. But the call of the wild usually wins out!

Because we are human and we are not always strong.

Committing sin hurts the people sinning. Gods laws are to bring us, his people happiness. The free sex culture has brought on lots of personal tragedies (STD's, Divorce, Mental stress, unwanted pregnancy etc.) and has caused much social tragedy, Abortion, Higher Cancer rates in Women, Poverty, and the breakdown of the family.

But MTV does not tell you this, they want to sell young people diet pills, sodas, alcohol, cars, electronics, bling, clothes, makeup, plastic surgery, on and on, and they use the old "Look good, have sex and be happy" line on them.

It is all about money, the lower our morals, the more we spend seeking happiness that can not be bought with a credit card.

Just my opinion...

Peace!

All major religions oppose indiscriminate sex.

My basic view, you have sex you're married. You made a choice, live with it forever.

There is no sin until you DUMP on the person you violate and were intimate with.

I'm sure NO ONE here enjoys being DUMPED

Getting DUMPED means there is something wrong with you, you are flawed, inferior, there is someone better than you, you are second best, you were just a port in a storm, you were nothing special, nothing to write home about.

islam bans premarital marriage. although some muslims do it. It's a human instinct and some people are just too horny. that's why many here, where i live, marry at an early age. 17->

Allah made reason for everything.
People, even muslims, do not have good islamic education.
They do not have a good reason to leave adultary; they don't know the harms of premarital sex. Also, they do not know the benefits of having good morals on their life ( this life ) and even their health ( psychological as well as physical ).
Remmeber what Prophet Mohammed (peace be upon him said ): Whoever leaves anything for sake of Allah, Allah will substitute him with something Better in his faith and in his life ( this life ).
If you study islam and believe in Allah and obey him will, Almighty Allah will make your life shiny and good.
And please let me remind you one more time that Allah made reason for everything
Thank you.

It's nature baby.

If a religion dictates that humans are not allowed to eat, then eventually the religion would die out, because it is unnatural and humans wouldn't be able to stop the natural urge to feed themselves for sustenance and to carry on living.

Sex is natures way to continue propagating the species, and marriage is a tradition created by man that isn't required by nature. So eventually our natural urges to procreate will win over our philisophical wants.
