We waited till our son was 6 months old. By then we had things under control. As first time parents we were not fully prepared for the reality of what lay ahead when we brought our baby home.

I would advise waiting till you and baby and household are running smoothly, and you have time and space for a dog. Introducing a dog into the equation too early could mean unhappiness for all concerned. I would get a puppy, then babe and pup grow up together. Our little lad of three is totally inseparable from our now grown German Shepherd. But we are diligent when they are together.

All the best with baby and prospective dog. (breeds I would go for are: Golden Retrievers, Labs, Collie, Greyhound, German Shepherd (of course). : )

Staffordshire Bull Terrier - often known as the nanny dog because they are so tolerant and incredibly protective of children in the house.
Agree with people about the allergies etc but you have to make the plunge at some point. If you get them both together it will be a huge amount of hardwork but at least they will be brought up together from day one and form a good bond. Puppies love to play though and have needle like teeth so be careful. I know a lot of people with a lot of different dogs and would always take the staffy over anything else.
My daughter is scared of dogs and we try and introduce her to them whenever we can, but she is only settled with staffies. Mine died when she was 6 months old and 18 months on we unfortunately due to work commitments are still not in a position to have another dog. A young child and a puppy would be too much of a burden for my wife when I am out of the house for long periods.
All these things need taking into consideration - it is no small decision having a dog, never mind coupled with a child.
If you are not sure about any of it WAIT.

A new puppy is going to be even more work than a new baby! At least you can put diapers on the baby.....housebreaking a puppy is a tough job! I think that others have given you good advice about waiting on the dog for awhile. But if you really, really want one, I would go with a well-trained adult dog or a much older puppy (maybe 7-8 months old) that is already housebroken. You might want to consider a small breed that is unable to jump into a crib or bassinet. I used to babysit for a family that had a Yorkie. They are smart and loving, only weigh about 8 pounds, and have hair instead of fur so they are "hypoallergenic."

You shouldn't get one at all until the baby is at least 1 or 2. I can't begin to explain to you how much work is ahead of you, you don't need another living thing to take care of for a while. And it's better if the baby is there first, so the dog understands its place when it arrives.

Don't get me wrong, I'm an animal lover, I have 2 cats and 1 dog right now. But if you don't already have them when you find out you are pregnant, it's better to wait. A lot of dogs who are around before the kid get jealous and think they have higher rank in the pack because they were there first.

Getting a dog right before you have a baby is a disaster in waiting. I won't go on about the work load like everyone else. Instead, I'll tell you that a dog and baby only mix if it's a dog that's already secure as part of the family. Otherwise, you need to wait until the baby is around 2. If you get a dog now, I can almost guarantee you it will attack your baby.

I wouldnt get a dog right now!!!!! And if your heart is set on getting a dog...DO NOT GET A PUPPY! Your life will be so backwards and turned around the dog will not get the attention they deserve! Wait till the baby is 6 months old and then take the baby with you when you get a dog. See how they react towards one another!
(When you do get one get a lab or a retriever...or a beagle..all of them are good with kids..but as i said wait till the baby is a little bigger!)

Why on earth would you get a dog when your about to have your first baby?? Its hard enough to cope looking after a baby without worrying about the dogs hygiene and your babies safety around it.
I think you should wait until your baby is a child who can help choose a puppy and get excited about having a pet, not chancing a baby being mauled.

I wouldn't get a puppy at the same time you are having a baby. I would wait until the child is a little older if you don't already have a dog. Golden retrievers are good with children, but having a puppy is like having a baby, so I would wait.

Are you nuts? You are going to have enough to get used to without throwing a new puppy in the mix.

Wait until baby arrives and then see how you feel about looking after a dog as well as a baby!

Good luck!
