I have just been 'elected' fire marshall for my company. (in NYC) I am not sure what this means exactly. What do I have to do? Do I have to take any courses, what does a fire marshall actually do? I ask because this morning there was a fire alarm but my building stays having fire alarms so when it went off all of us stayed put, it doesnt even phase us anymore. As the fire marshall am i suppose to call the main building number to find out what to do or am i suppose to evacuate people. Im so confused and I am chicken sh!t when it comes to fires. As long as I dont gotta play hero, Im fine, lol. Thats for your answers.

As a retired State Fire Marshal, I can assure you that you have an important job for this company... I can only assume that you have replaced one and if so there must be documentation of what has to be done and what your responsibilites are. If this is a new position then you must start making policies for what has to be done. Contacting the local Fire marshal would be a good start...YES, taking the appropriate classes for this type of work is a MUST. Hopefully, your company will send you to those classes at their expense. You might also find out if other companies similiar to yours in size/responsibility has a fire marshal.. You can gain valuable info from him/her....Soooooooooooo, good buddy you have a long way to go...I only hope you put in the time and effort required to fulfill a job with this responsbility....GOOD LUCK

well my dad was a firefighter in NYC for a long time and then like you got a chance to be a fire marshall and yes you do have to take classes, the only thing my dad hated was all the paper work you have to do, he had a lot of experience with dog training so they gave him an arson dog and he trained in Maine, basically he would go to buildings where a fire occured and determine what caused it arson, electrical, etc and his dog was trained to smell for gasoline, (this was between 1992-1996) the dog actually caught arsonists (murderers) and him and my dad were on the cover of the NY Post and on the news, it was pretty neat, my dad would wear a suit, was trained and issued a gun and handcuffs, he would arrest people too, but it sounds like you don't work for the fire department so i think you'll just have to inspect smoke alarm rules and fire hazards and things like that

You work for the fire dept. and you're afraid of fire? Maybe it's time to find a new line of work. That's like being afraid of dogs and working in a kennel. It makes no sense.

This site explains what NYC marshals do:

I did read the entire question, but I must have misunderstood. Sorry

i think of you ought to save with swimming, you're able to desire to catch up in case you somewhat tried. attempt to get swim training a minimum of once or twice each and every week as nicely the practices that might actually assist you get closer the others. A tip I truthfully have is that when you're swimming save your face interior the water, and once you're respiratory, breath to the facet no longer in front. once you breathe, attempt to no longer take your finished head out of the water which will sluggish you down. attempt to get purely a million/2 your face out of the water for respiratory.

My only guess would be that you are the one we talk to when we arrive on scene to your company when its on fire. Other than that, I can't imagine too other many duties, if you were just randomly elected.
