We are taking our dog in for his shots next weekend, he is eight years old. He hasn't had his vacinations for a while and is due. The vet asked on the phone if he needs rabies shots too. I'm not sure, but he is not fixed and he does tend to get away from us sometimes. We live in a city, but still..

At 8 years old, if your dog has had shots from the time he was a puppy, he probably has all the immunity he needs or will ever get from the routine shots (besides rabies). Several recent studies have shown that vaccines are effective for much longer than the one year they are recommended for, and getting vaccines every year even if they are not needed can lead to cancers in the areas the shots have been injected. Many vets are not recommending annual vaccine protocols any longer.

Living in a city, I would guess that means your dog is licensed, and in order for licensing, he would have had to be vaccinated against rabies at the time of his most recent licensing. See if you can find out when he was last vaccinated for rabies, and if it has been three years or more, get him vaccinated. If it has NOT been three years, check the certificate issued when he was last vaccinated, and see if it is marked "3 year" or "1 year", and take the certificate with you to the vet. With the certificate, you should be able to have him vaccinated with a three-year rabies vaccine rather than putting him through it annually.

If he is NOT up to date on his rabies shot, and he gets away from you- if he bites or scratches a human or another animal, the law can have him quarantined for ten days or destroyed and tested for rabies, which I am sure you do not want to happen. If he is ever in a fight with other dogs or any wildlife, and is already vaccinated, you would only need to get him a booster shot within 5 days of the exposure, and he would be fine. In the case of biting or scratching a human, if he is current on his rabies shot, they would be fine. In any of these situations, it is better for all involved if his rabies shot is up to date, and you keep a record where you can find it easily.

I hope this helps you. Good luck to you and your best buddy.

Rabies shots are available special strengths. They will have to acquire their first shot at about 15 weeks of age and then every year pictures after that. While the preliminary injection is as a rule the one yr dosage, you could decide upon the 2nd and subsequent injections to be the three year shots. They fee just a little extra, but you don't need to fear about security for three years. The draw back to getting the three yr shot is that the majority communities have legal guidelines that dogs acquire a series of preventive injections (distemper, hepatitis, and so on.) furthermore to the rabies vaccination. The other series of injections are most effective on hand in a single 12 months dosages and are ordinarily given even as as the rabies vaccine, so you're no longer saving yourself a go back and forth to the vet by means of getting the three 12 months dose. Moreover, a couple of vets offer a bundle cost on the one 12 months injections which entails the rabies vaccine.

It is the law!!! He must be current on his rabies shot.
if it has been 3 years, he needs his rabies shot. They are only good for 3 years(legally). Even if he lived inside and never once got outside and a rat never once got in, it is the law. If an officer stops you on a walk, and he doesn't have his shot, you will get a fine, and if you fail to get the shot within an alloted period of time, they will seize the dog.
Also, if your dog ever bites anyone, even a person breaking into your home, and he doesn't have his shot, that is not good for him, some places will automatically put him down, the same goes if any raccoon , fox or whatever(that are plentyful in the city) bites him, and he isn't current.

None of my dogs have ever had their rabies shots and they were all just fine. You should have gotten him fixed 7 1/2 years ago and because you didn't he will run off if there's a female in the area that goes into heat. And like someone else said, being fixed or not has nothing to do with rabies. The only way a dog can get rabies if he eats or is bitten by something that has rabies. Since your dog runs off sometimes, you should really get him the shot because paying for the shot is a lot better than having to put your dog down because of rabies. Have you ever seen "Kujo"?

Rabies shots are the only ones required by law for pets to have, at least that is how it is in my state. Plus, you would not want your dog to get rabies would you? Especially since it is preventable by a simple shot. It's cheap, easy and quick.
Just because you live in a city does not mean anything. Animals that carry rabies do not just live in rural areas.

Rabies shot has nothing to do with being fixed. All states legally require dog owners to give their dogs the rabies shot. This is a fatal disease in animals and if a human is bitten by a rabid animal it can be fatal for them as well. In actuality, the human must receive many weeks of treatment. Do the responsible thing and have your dog vaccinated.

Rabies shots are good for three years...I would ask the vet doing the shots...you can overlap, it should not hurt the dog

you have to give the rabies shot thought, it is the most important one to have and by law, the animal must have it too

All dogs should have rabies shots.
These are ONLY given by a vet.

If he gets away from you EVER, he can be bitten and infected with rabies... he can bite someone and cause THEM to go through painful rabies shots for which YOU are responsible to pay for!

makes no difference where you live...
get the rabies shot as w ell as the rest.
He should be vaccinated annually.

Of course the dog needs his rabie shot. In most states it is the law, but I don't know where you live. Here where I am we have to give the rabie tag number every year when we get the new dog license.

You always need to get him a rabies shot. I think the vet's question intended to be is he due for his rabies shot, which is usually given as a three year vaccination (meaning he needs one every three years). Many places legally require dogs to be vaccinated against rabies.
