Your friend should concentrate on avoiding junk food and eating smaller portions. She should eat lean meats, whole grains, vegetables, and fruits. Drinking lots of water and avoiding sugary soft drinks will also help. If she does this and exercises, she will lose weight in a healthy manner. If she's interested in sports, dancing, or any other physical activity she should get involved with that, too. Increasing her exercise and cutting back on portions is a sure way to weight loss success.

She should first probably see her doctor to determine if weight loss is necessary. Then if she does need to lose some weight, she should simply follow a healthy eating plan. Cut out refined sugar, meaning only eating sugar naturally occuring in fruit mostly, and try to eat healthy carbs such as whole grain breads and cereals. Like whole wheat bread instead of white, and oatmeal instead of frosted flakes. Eat lots of fresh vegetables, fill up on veggies. Then exercise 5 days a week. It should come off slowly and healthfully.

If she really thinks she needs to lose weight she might want to ask her parents to set up an appointment with her doctor. He/she can provide proper guidance as to how to lose weight. Short of that, more exercise will likely help and it's hard to go wrong there.

The best way to lose weight, no matter what age you are, is to watch what you eat and get excercise. Limit soda and other sugary foods and eat lots of fruits and veggies. I wouldn't advise hard core excercise for a twelve year old, but she should definitely play some sports or just go outside and play! Good luck! : )

Does she *need* to lose weight?
Regardless, you've never too young to get in the habit of healthy living. Regular exercise should be a lifestyle. But exercise in moderation, since, at this age, your body needs energy to grow. You could conceivably stunt your growth by over-training at this age. Get your activity by joining your school's sports team, or join a gym and get involved in a group exercise program.
Eating a healthy diet may or may not help you or your friend lose weight, but it definitely won't harm your bodies! Just learn to replace unhealthy foods with healthy ones. First, cut out as much fast food and soda as possible. Prefer lean baked meats to fried and/or fatty meats; always remove the skin from chicken; use 100% whole wheat bread instead of white bread; replace potato chips with fresh fruits or veggies; avoid refined sugars and sweats---replace them with fruits and veggies; try to eat a lot of grains and beans, etc.

I've lost 5 kilos in my first week. It's my 10th day and I have included salad with some protein (eg. egg/ lean chicken) as you suggested. After 4 years of trying, the fat is finally coming off. It truly feels like magic!
Get started today!
