LOL, I used to do that to my kids too. I can't tell you outright as there are several ways to disable a vehicle, but start reading up on the mechanics of an engine and you may be able to trouble shoot it and come across his little trick. For instance..coil wire connected?, Timing sensor on the flywheel connected?, switch on the fuel flow line installed?, and so on. Read up on engines and make yourself a preflight check list like pilots have. Maybe he will be impressed by your enthusiasm and ease up a bit.

sounds like a simple switch instalation , knocking out the ignition system, shutting down the spark.

Trace out the power wire feeds to the coil or coil pack.

Not likely a switch, unless he installed it himself. More likely he's pulling the wire off the distributor. Look for loose wires.

battery wire, coil wire, fuse? could be more than one thing. you need to know how an engine is set up to know what to look for. just start looking for loose wires
