This is because of the unique individuality that each one of us is endowed with at the time when we are concieved within our mother's wombs. Though we may all be created in God's image (a christian doctrine), each one of us is different from each other in a unique and special way.

Lots of reasons, actually. A lot is from life experience. I've been through some rough times and I decided that instead of being angry and hateful, I would learn something from it. Also, my parents instilled in me a set of values that have taught me to respect others even if I don't understand them or care for how they live their lives. Those, combined with the teachings of Islam, make me who I am and I am proud of that.

Because of all the things - good and bad - that have happened in my life, and the way I have responded to them; because of all the people - good and bad - I have met, and all the things I have learned from them; my sexuality; my religion.

I am the computational sum total of my past experiences. I can be nothing but what I am, and will be nothing but what I will be. Perfectly deterministic, perfectly computable.

In short -- I am my environment. 'I' do not exist except in relationship to that.
