You will have to pay for the service but, iTunes is nice.. If you want free ware then... None of them are exactly safe but ....Limewire, is a good shareware program if you learn to use it with caution. First you want to go into settings and unclick shared files ( or change it to 0 which ever your version says) so no one can get into your computer through a file... I also only allow access through my firewall when I am actually using Limewire .Then be careful, if the file is just too big to believe like 5000kb's for a 2 minute song, forget it..(.a 2 minute song should be in the 2000kbs range)... Do not get it if there is no bit rate, .. a normal bit rate will be at least 128 . I download all music to a temporary file on my desktop and scan the files for virus and spywear BEFORE I put it into my computer.. There are lots of "safe " pay for programs just google it ! Make sure your security is good and up to date before using any share ware programming ...

The only way to legally download music is to pay for it. Except for a couple very rare instances, downloaded music for free is illegal.
That being said, there are several legal websites where you can pay for your songs and download them legitimately, and you'll be completely safe from viruses.
walmart.com is a good one, they offer songs for 88 cents a track.
itunes.com is probably the most popular, they charge 99 cents a track, and they use a specialized format, but they have a huge selection.
napster.com is another good one. You can either pay 99 cents per track, or have a flat monthly subscription fee and be able to download as much as you want.
Hope this helps some. Happy downloading!

Try download.com. It is free and very legal since this is music provided by starting artists, not mainstream, but there really is some very good stuff out there. If they become famous (and some do), you may have already gotten the song that made them famous AND when it was free. For mainstream and for a fee, I agree with others - itunes.

iTunes is a good place. You will pay for the songs, but the chances of viruses are far less than if you use Limewire, Bearshare, etc..

i would reccomend the zune pass program. for 14.99 month you get unlimited (and legal) music downloads and get to keep 10 songs per month. the only negative to this is if you cancel your subscription you dont keep the songs except the ones from your 10 per month. i beleive you can trial the zune pass for 14 days on their website.

iTunes, etc. Any Major site that charges for music should be safe.
Oh, you mean for free? Free and legal stuff is out there, you just have to look for "Independent' sites like:
