Sounds like a rather smug attempt at claiming superiority over anyone not in the Christian club.

It's the purest expression of the truth about sinner's and believer's views of the Word. Salvation (the Cross) truly IS foolishness to those who are perishing (spiritually dying) and a highest hope to the saints that their works and very lives in defense of the Gospel are not in vain!

To those who do not believe that Jesus' death on the cross can save mankind, the message of the cross is foolishness. But to those who believe that Jesus saves the message of the cross is the power of God for salvation.

I think it says that the message or the power brought about by the cross is meaningless for those who are non-believers, but to us christians, it is God's saving grace. This is probably why it is named "Paradox of the Cross"

I think its very akin to

Romans 1:18-25 The wrath of God is being revealed from heaven against all the godlessness and wickedness of men who suppress the truth by their wickedness, since what may be known about God is plain to them, because God has made it plain to them. For since the creation of the world God's invisible qualities--his eternal power and divine nature--have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that men are without excuse. For although they knew God, they neither glorified him as God nor gave thanks to him, but their thinking became futile and their foolish hearts were darkened. Although they claimed to be wise, they became fools and exchanged the glory of the immortal God for images made to look like mortal man and birds and animals and reptiles. Therefore God gave them over in the sinful desires of their hearts to sexual impurity for the degrading of their bodies with one another. They exchanged the truth of God for a lie, and worshiped and served created things rather than the Creator--who is forever praised. Amen.

There are so many versions and edits and omissions and additions that claim to be one and only versions that only fools debate which is most accurate while most do not even walk the path they fight to defend or inflict, for their own edification or glorification.

We argue over the parts while ignoring the whole sum.

I suggest you read Dr. Barbara Theirings, (I hope I got the name right) books about Jesus the man and the information derived from various dead sea scrolls, to gain a better understanding of just how manipulated all scriptures are and comprehend the true meaning of his examples, which have fallen by the way side in favor of those who would ride his coat tails, like wolves in shepherd's clothing.

Jesus did not promote church, he stood against religion and rather favored conscientious and considerate living with and within humble interrelationship.

Even each verse in the bible has a different wording in each version and we still have the audacity to chose one version and stand behind it alone or argue over the placement of deck chairs while the titanic sinks.

Those who argue over verbiage and wording are like clerics, politicians, lobbyists, extremists and lawyers, trying to plead the case for their side alone...for their gains alone...no matter the religion, politics, economics or selfish motive.

While balance within civilization itself and civilization's interrelationship within that provided by whatever lords over all... is virtually ignored.

From the response of some of our regulars on the R&S who are atheist, agnostic, and evolutionist -- it seems evidently obvious that to these the Good News is indeed foolishness while to the believers, it is the very water of life we receive free from God.

Thus this scripture clearly describe affairs as they are.

(1 Corinthians 1:18) For the speech about the torture stake is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is God’s power.

Not so much different, are they?

It means that those taking no notice of what the Bible says are in fact ignoring God and will pay the ultimate price...their lives.

Exactly what it says, people who do not believe in Christs suffering for their sins think this is a fable. But for a believer it is life giving, not just for our time on earth, but for eternity.Yes the goodness and grace of God is so powerful, that this truth caused us to be saved.

It means I believe something and another believes something else. Read all the answers here. To me it is the power of God, to others it is foolishness.
And it says "being saved", because salvation is not a certain event in time, but rather a process that lasts all your life. This is something that Jews, for example, will never be able to experience.
