I grew up in a very strict catholic family, I would have to say that a good First Communion gift is either a prayer book or a set of rosary beads.

Honestly though I don't remember getting an actual gift for my First Communion, I do remember getting cards from family members and being taken out to brunch afterwards.

Of course that was so many years ago that my memory may be poor on the matter.

A card and gift from a Catholic bookstore or gift store. I don't know if they have communion cards that are also money holders, that might be an idea. If you know something about their interest in Catholicism, what saints and stories from the Bible they are interested in, etc... that might help too. You could look for a gift related to their favorite saint, bible story or story or miracle from Catholic history. Hope this helps! Happy First Communion to your daughter's friend!!!

p.s. , I think the standard gift is a religious card and rosary beads or necklace with a cross.

being catholic myself, i called my mom and asked her. as she recalled i recieved rosary beads from my parents and a bible from my grandparents. the rest of the family and friends in attendance gave me cards and that was about it. no need for 20 rosary bead sets or bibles, unless you think you have a great idea forget the gift and stick with a card.

most people get a cross of somesort, either to hang on the wall or a necklace. If you are not catholic or think that others might get her a cross, you can get her a locket. For my comfirmation my god-mother got me a pretty locket that I still wear.
